I'm announcing this semi annual event early this season, as I'll be traveling for most of October. Folks who have been thinking about participating now have extra lead time to mark their calendars and save the date. This is the fall-back, time-change Sunday, so it'll feel like 11 AM to people arriving at the CVS. The weekend sleepers among us will surely appreciate. If you'd like breakfast with the crew beforehand, show up at the Latham 76 Diner, on Route 9 at 8:30. The now familiar drill includes newbies signing liability waivers and everybody signing in. I will bring hard hats and reflective vests for all, which must be worn. I will also bring work gloves and water for all, but feel free to bring your own, if you prefer. I'll also have a first aid kit to deal with any nicks or scrapes that happen. Long pants are a must and wear sturdy shoes, like hiking boots or lug-sole work shoes. Bad weather will postpone the event, so monitor your email as the time approaches, and especially the night before.
There will be pictures at the end, perhaps some at our new adopt-a-highway credit sign at Bogt Corners by the Cumberland Farms store, so bringing some kind of camera would be a good idea.
People who've done this will tell you it's hard work, but satisfying and actually kind of fun. We find some really strange stuff and afterwords, it always gets woven into an amusing story. Plus its great to be out as a group and doing something physical on a crisp autumn morning.
Special plea here to the folks who've been cheering this activity from the sidelines. Those of us who ply the ditches of Route 9R on a regular basis really do appreciate the love, but, if you're fit, won't you consider stepping up and taking a turn? It's your name on those highway signs too, and you'll feel good about it.
