Memphis Atheists Pages

Memphis Atheists (“MA”) is a social group for atheists, agnostics, humanists, and skeptics. Our emphasis is on creating connections and friendships between like-minded people through informal social events, usually involving drinking, or eating and drinking, or gaming and drinking, or watching movies and drinking…did we mention drinking?

I. General Conduct

  • MA does not tolerate harassment. We are dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of MA members in any form.

  • All MA members and their guests are expected to treat each other with, at a minimum, courtesy and respect.

  • Responsible and mature adults can always have differing opinions, and can freely offer them. However, demeaning, insulting, sexist, racist, cruel, or being an all-around ass-hole is not generally acceptable behavior.

  • If any MA member or other person engages in said behavior, and refuses to comply when told to stop. They should fully expect any or all of the following:

    • Being Expelled from the Membership roster, without refund.

    • Being prohibited from attending that meetup again.

  • The options identified in (3.1 and 3.2), above, can be exercised by the group administrator(s) of the aforementioned webpage, and can be based on received complaints or based on behavior he/she/they directly observed.

  • Threats or acts of physical violence committed by or against any MA member during a social gathering will not be tolerated.

    • Persons engaged in such behavior will be permanently excluded from any and all MA informal or formal events, gatherings, parties, etc.

    • While MA cannot compel it, we assert that group members have an ethical obligation to report any violent behavior to local law enforcement, and cooperate in any ensuing investigation or legal matter.

II. Conduct at Private Homes

  • In addition to following the guidelines in Section I, above, MA members and other persons attending social events at a person’s home are expected to follow and obey any and all “rules of the house” that the homeowner makes known before or during the social event. For example, the homeowner requests that shoes are removed upon entry; a certain door should be used for entry/exit; persons should not go into certain areas of the home, etc.

  • Adherence to and enforcement of “rules of the house” is the primary responsibility of the homeowner, and is at their sole discretion.

  • The same as under any other normal circumstance, a homeowner may command anyone to leave their property at any time, for any reason or for no reason. People attending parties at private homes shouldn’t be ass-holes, and neither should the homeowner (cf. Section I.1., second sentence). Use some common-sense for fuck’s sake.

III. Social Instead of Educational Purposes

  • While MA is proud to have a highly intelligent and diverse community, we are not primarily a debate or discussion group, although that occasionally spontaneously occurs.

  • Any person looking for a more formalized discussion and education-oriented group and not a social group, we happily encourage you to consider participating in events sponsored by the Memphis Freethought Alliance (“MFA”). Participation with both MA and the MFA is not mutually exclusive, and is encouraged.

IV. Miscellaneous

  • Nothing in this policy is meant or should be interpreted to bar, deter, interfere with, or restrict any individual, in their capacity as a private citizen, resident, or visitor in Memphis and the surrounding area, from exercising any right or entitlement guaranteed under law.

  • Anyone making a double entendre or other fun of the repeated use of the word “member” in this document beyond the first occurrence shall owe any and all creator(s), drafter(s) and editor(s) of this document one alcoholic beverage of his/her/their choice per occurrence beyond the first. This includes the creator(s), drafter(s) and editor(s) themselves. This is mandatory. So say we all.
