Background: On July 3rd, 2009, fellow river rat paddler, Belton Dykes, passed away while paddling. Belton was an avid paddler, outdoorsman, retired Physical Therapist, Army veteran, Citadel student-athlete, caver, racketball player, music lover, friend, beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He is greatly missed by many.

To honor his memory, his friends decided to organize a fun paddling event. The proceeds of this fundraiser will go to Team River Runner, which is a non-profit organization that gives disabled and wounded military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and their family members an opportunity to find health, healing, and new challenges through whitewater boating and other paddling sports.

This was an outstanding trip! Well organized and well run. The River Rat Volunteers did a wonderful job in coordinating and running the trip. I'm looking forward to next year! What a nice group of people. I made lots of new friends.

Jamie Higgins, the organizer of this event, says we can camp Thursday evening but can't get in until after 3 PM. She says tents should be set up on the right side of the pavilion and we need to sign a waiver when we arrive. Hope this helps answer some questions.

Sounds good. Maybe they will put that info in the next packet when you register. At least for me it would have cleared up a few questions.

My friend and I are planning to drive down Thursday and camp at Doe Lake Thursday night. Marie confirmed our reservation ( for everyone registered to paddle) starts at 3 PM Thursday so I don't see what the problem is.

When I received the info packet from Jamie I noticed it said that
no one should set up a tent/campsite until you had registered and the first registration is at 7:30AM Friday. I e-mailed Jamie and asked about Thursday arrivals and he indicated that most attendees arriving Thursday were staying at Hotels, and Thursday was mostly for staff set-up. So I have opted to camp at Silver Springs State Park which is only about 15 miles from Doe Lake.

I think you are right Bill. It's a long drive from Suwanee. I have to work out a few details but it sounds like a great trip!!

there is one paddle, Juniper Springs, that is extremely beautiful, and twisty, rapid flow... good to have a short boat. The other paddles are best in a long boat... I'm bringing 2 boats, a 12.5' and a 16'

The last count of registered paddlers I heard was 65. A lot of us will be there Thursday, to set camp and paddle Friday. These are some of the absolute, most beautiful paddles you will ever do! Come as early as you can, and plan to stay long!

Not sure how this works. My kayak is not big enough for camping gear. And I don't have tent camping gear; I have a camper van. If we're staying at the campground mentioned, can I camp in my camper van?
