Monetizing Content

The monetization landscape for content creators is constantly in flux. Many small publishers have no idea where to start, and others who are steadily growing don't understand the unique opportunities and technologies that can help them more efficiently monetize their growing audience. We'll outline easy strategies to start monetizing online audiences and work outward toward the opportunities available when publishers grow their audiences past important metric benchmarks.

About the Speaker

Michael Hogenmiller is the Chief Operating Officer at Cheri Media, a small online publishing outfit based out of Los Angeles, CA. We're a small group of passionate people dedicated to making the music journalism world better through superior thought leadership and innovative interactive experiences. That’s basically a mouthful of marketing-babble that means we write about music with integrity, and we work to design music websites better than anyone else. So far, it’s worked. Over 2.5 million people visit our publications each month to read the latest music news, digest our expert album reviews, and listen to and watch musical performances by their favorite artists. Before Cheri Media, Michael did stints in Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York working for television shows, political campaigns, and ad agencies.

What I liked most about the meeting was the information from the other bloggers, especially from Darcy - the international guy and the Red Head Baby Mama. Nobody has all the answers, but collectively we can offer a lot of answers. I am so glad that everyone shares because in my other profession, nobody shares. Hopefully my blog will be up and running soon again.

I think a meetup of product creation and development as well as how to get a number of people interested in what you have to sell.

I think Michael was a great speaker as well - however, "monetization" is probably too broad a term to use. I'm a full time blogger (I make 100% of my income off of it) and so display advertising is old news to me. Maybe we can clarify next time with what type of monetization we are going to discuss? When signing up for it, this is the sentence that intrigued me:

". . . and work outward toward the opportunities available when publishers grow their audiences past important metric benchmarks."

But it was still display advertising. I know there are newbies that need to learn this stuff, I'm just asking for more specific descriptions so that those of us who have been around for years know what it's going to be about :D Thank you!

Michael was a great speaker, but I feel like he is focused on large websites and big dollar amounts. In this era of the "tiny blogger", there are lots more ways than Google AdSense for small sites to make money. Depending on your blog's niche, the big numbers of page views that Michael discussed are not necessary to be a part of a Tier 2 advertising network. Maybe next time monetization of blogs is discussed, you can invite a "small blogger" to give a different viewpoint.

Lorrie, maybe you are the person to give the talk! I would be interested to hear what you've got to say. I did enjoy the talk last night as well. I think most bloggers start with the hope that one day their site will "get big." It's certainly possible....

Michael was an excellent speaker! He outlined everything simply and clearly. I'm really motivated to look into monetization of my two blogs! (Russell: please don't forget to post the link to Michael's presentation)

Totally wish I could be there. I'm always open to new ideas. I've recently launched a new blog with a paywall on it. Would like to see how others are monetizing their blog.
