The organizers did an awesome service for the local community. Rails can be a challenge to install but this Installfest took the pain and uncertainty out of the process. Hat tip to Ryan Burnette who was the one who helped me.

I had a great time. Ryan helped me install Rails . Everyone was really nice. I'll definitely go back.

I'm totally brand new to coding. Would this meet up be completely over my head?

Furthermore, Ruby itself is a great language to begin programming. We can collectively help give you resources to get better at programming.

I am going to bring a copy of the JRuby installer. In a Windows environment, it may be easier to setup.

      Great idea

If you're on OSX, I'd strongly suggest installing Developer Tools (in App Store) in advance.

      Agree - More details: http://stackoverflow....

      1 · February 22, 2014

    • Frank R.

Yes, do this! Download XCode from the App Store today rather than at the event. It's several GB.

Thoughtworks will be providing food tomorrow. See you at 1:30pm. This is going to be exciting.

Hey Folks. I have RoR already setup on my MacOSx machine... Can I still come to pick the brains of the experts as I'm still a newbie with a lot to learn...?

    February 21, 2014

    • Al S.

Our main focus will be installed the toolchain - maybe you can help out with others.

Will there be wi-fi available and can I setup a cloud-based VM instead?

    February 20, 2014

    • Al S.

      I expect a wi-fi to be available.

Hi, all. I have developed a number of applications using Rails 2, which I developed on an Acer Netbook on which I "blew out" the Windows operating system and installed Ubuntu Linux.

While those applications are still in use, since developing them, I switched from my Windows desktop to a Mac Mini, got a Macbook Pro, and the poor Acer Netbook went to notebook heaven.

I would really like to join you all on Sunday, and I'm planning to do so, as I think I need to get my RoR apps current (which I assume means Rails 4.xx and Ruby 2.xx) but I would appreciate it if someone could now tell me whether I am better off using my Macbook or something else, as I am willing to commit a new notebook to RoR development if necessary to avoid messing up the apps which are already on the Macbook. I am comfortable with OS/X, Windows, and Ubuntu Linux.

    Suggestions?

    February 20, 2014

    • Al S.

I would point you to a Linux or Mac environment if you had a choice. Yes, Rails 4.0 and Ruby 2.0 will probably be the defaults for brand new folks. We have installed RVM/RBENV last month on Linux/Mac to separate versions.

    • Al S.

Converting a Rails 2.x to Rails 4.x is a very big task.

      February 20, 2014

  • Ryan B.

I'm still pretty green at both Ruby and Rails but I can probably be helpful with Mac OS or Linux environment stuff. Looking forward to meeting some new people in ATL.

    February 20, 2014

    • Al S.

      THANKS SO MUCH.

      February 20, 2014

Please remember to bring your laptop so we can set up your Rails development environment.

    Here to help

I can confirm that I will indeed be there, ready to help people get started with Ruby on Mac OS X or Linux. If you are on Windows, I really suggest trying out Ubuntu Linux in a virtual machine for your starter Ruby environment as many of the tools we use are Unix-based.

I can offer short term use of EC2 instances for this if it would help.

    February 7, 2014

  • Frank R.

Al, I am happy to be there and to help get new folks setup with Ruby. I can setup Mac OS X and Linux proficiently since that is what we use at work.
