Parallel Mothers (Spain 2021) [M]

Details

Parallel Mothers is the story of 2 mothers who give birth on the same day. If I tell you that this is the story a child-swop in the hospital, you are probably going to say "been there and seen that".

But this film illuminates the relationship between a new mum, who is nearly 40 and a new teenage mum. The background scenario of the film is the Spanish civil war and hidden family secrets. Having children changes everything of course and life and political events shape us.

The NZ Herald reviewer wrote: "The movie shows how life's events can turn us into different versions of ourselves. Its plot twists are taut and gripping, its messages haunting. Highly recommended."

The Times of India reviewer wrote: "The strength of this artsy film lies in strong performances and genuine characters. Almodóvar delivers a heartrending drama about love, life and relationships with a pop of colours that never let it slip into the dark recesses of hopelessness."

No spoiler alerts beyond that. However, this is a great film for men to watch - it helps us understand first time mums!
