Camping in Bend, Texas

  • Barefoot Camp and RV Park

P.O. Box 49, Bend, TX (map)

    31.104685 -98.513430

  • Let's get together for a weekend at an unusual venue. While many of us have camped at Colorado Bend State Park, most of us probably haven't been to the privately-owned Barefoot Camp. This property is on the Colorado River and boasts 3 miles of riverfront, primitive camping.

The tent camping at Barefoot is primitive, so no potable water or electricity will be available. So you will need to plan accordingly and bring enough water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. Also, it's a decent distance to the bathroom facilities.

Even though this is considered primitive camping, it is still car camping as cars are allowed to drive right up to the camping sites. Some sites have picnic tables.

Pets are allowed, but must be kept on a leash.

The cost is $5.00 per person, per 24 hour period. You will pay this fee directly to Barefoot Camp upon entry. There is no additional cost to camp. No reservations are allowed for the primitive sites but with 3 miles of riverfront, space will not be an issue.

I have opened this trip up to our friends in the Austin Backpackers Meetup group so this will give us an opportunity to make lots of new friends!

Me and Ginni are going to pack the Ford on Friday and hold off until Saturday morning. The forecast is for the rain to move through and clear out quickly. Neither of us has rain-tested our gear for a while, so we decided not to do it when we know it's coming. Also, hate to be stuck inside the tent instead of outside.

See you Saturday morning! Bill & friend Ginni.

I'm not talking about camping under the pavilion, just a place to shelter, cook, visit if it's raining on Friday, maybe Saturday morning. Otherwise, we sit in cars or tents, because I don't think they have roofs over the "some" picnic tables they say are there.

Bring tarps if you've got them. Canopies (w/the legs/frame) work great also.

Bill.....you are correct. They do not have covered picnic tables.

I was wondering if everyone might want to share the $25 cost for one of their pavilions on Friday while the rain is forecast? I don't think there's any roof over the picnic tables at campsites. I can try to reserve one in advance.

I'm not interested in using the pavilion because I'll have my dogs with me.

But I think it's a great idea, Bill!

The weather forecast looks like we may have a wet weekend so be sure to bring your tent's rainfly. Also, when setting up your tent, be sure that your ground cloth does not extend beyond the perimeter of your tent. An oversized ground cloth will funnel water under your tent!

Can someone bring a bicycle we could use to ride to the bathroom if it's a long hike?

I'm going to ask the site about filling water containers. Surely they don't mean hauling it from Austin.

I really want to attend this outing but will be returning from a trip and I'm not sure when I'll be back.

I'm now bringing a friend. That makes two. There might be a third, but she's from London, has never been camping, and is freaked over no shower. I didn't mention the chance of an outhouse.
