Colorado Bend State Park - Kiddie Kamp

  • Nov 10, 2012 · 3:00 PM
  • Colorado Bend State Park

The weather is right for getting back to nature with your happy little campers. Join us this weekend for a one night kid-centric camping trip at beautiful Colorado Bend State Park. This is a great opportunity to let your kids have all the outdoor fun their little hearts desire.

I will be arriving about 3pm Saturday, allowing plenty of daylight to setup camp and start a campfire. There are no scheduled activities. I plan on mostly staying around camp and the river Saturday evening and doing a short hike Sunday morning.

This trip will be geared toward fun times for younger children. Older kids are welcome as long as they get along well with small children.

Park Activities: Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, swimming, paddling, birding and wildlife viewing. The park has 26 miles of multi-use trails (hiking and mountain biking) and 4 miles of trail designated as hiking only. When river levels are normal (call for current conditions) paddlers can travel upstream as well as down to explore or access the park by river.

Gorman Falls Tours: Gorman Falls is 65 feet of cascading mineral laden waters that continue building up and advancing out from the bluff creating fantastic formations and breathtaking beauty. Hike from high above the Colorado River down the rocky bluffs into the river canyon. Stand at the base of the falls and discover why for centuries it has been called “The Land of Living Waters”. Sturdy footwear and drinking water required. Tour cancelled in inclement weather. Vehicle needed to travel into the Gorman Falls Area. Meet at Gorman Falls Trailhead, 1/2 mile from park entrance. No pets. $5 per person, $2 children 12 & under; park entrance fees apply. Reservations not required.

Note: I will be arriving around 3pm and will not be able to make the cave tour, but don't let this stop you.

FOOD PLANNING: I will bring hot dogs & s'mores for Saturday night and eggs & sausage for Sunday morning. I'll have some to share, but not enough to feed everyone. Be sure to bring your own food and drinks. Feel free to start a discussion if you would like to plan a bigger group meal.

CAMPSITE FEE: $2/person (all ages), payable to me upon arrival. Be sure to count your kids as part of your RSVP.

ENTRANCE FEE: $4/person (13 years and older) per day, payable at the park office upon arrival.

SHOWERS/TOILETS: Composting toilets are located in the area. Cold water rinse-off showers are available.

KID FRIENDLY: Yes. Please review the camping with kids policy.

DOG FRIENDLY: Yes. Pets must be attended and on a six-foot leash at all times. Pets are not allowed in any park buildings, cabins, or shelters. Owners must provide proof of current vaccinations for each pet entering the park. Please read our policy on camping with dogs.

BOATING: The boat ramp is closed due to low water.

RV CAMPING: No.

FIREWOOD: Gathering of firewood is prohibited. Please bring firewood.

EXCESS VEHICLES: An excess vehicle fee will be charged for all vehicles over the limit of 2 per site. Please carpool if possible.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: Public consumption or display of an alcoholic beverage is prohibited. This is a kid-friendly camping trip. Please be respectful and drink responsibly.

OTHER RULES: Glass containers and fireworks are prohibited.

DIRECTIONS: The park is west of Lampasas, southeast of San Saba. From the intersection of US Highways 281 and 183 in Lampasas, take FM 580 west 24 miles to Bend and follow the signs 4 miles to the park entrance. From San Saba, take US Highway 190 about 4 miles to FM 580 and follow the signs 13 miles to Bend; follow the signs 4 miles to the park entrance (2 miles of dirt road). The headquarters and main camping are 6 miles past the entrance on the dirt road (unmarked County Road 442). (Access road subject to flooding.) Note: No Gasoline Service in Bend.
