Garrison Brothers Distillery Tour

UPDATE: I am rescheduling this to a Sunday tour due to the higher fee for a Saturday tour, and the weather this weekend is potentially stormy. Please note that I am changing to a 2pm Sunday tour. You will need to be at the distillery in Hye before 2pm, or if you prefer to meet me in South Austin for brunch or carpool/caravan, I will be at Jack Allen's Kitchen in Oak Hill on Hwy 71 for Sunday brunch at 11:30am, and will leave for the distillery by about 12:45pm.

***********

This is the closest whiskey distillery that I know of, and they have a regular tour set up. If you're wondering the Celtic connection here, all whisk(e)y is a descendant of "uisge beatha" - Gaelic for the "water of life." The Garrison Brothers brand of whiskey is that of a Texas bourbon. For more information on different types of whisk(e)y, see my presentations in the Files section of this Meetup group.

The Garrison Brothers distillery is located in Hye, Texas -- between Johnson City and Fredericksburg. I will post somewhere we can meet in Southwest Austin for those who would like to drive out there together. But if you want to meet at the distillery, that is fine, too. There is a lot to do in the area -- my favorites are Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and Luckenbach!

Here is the link for more information on the distillery tour:

And here are directions via Google Maps from Austin:

Hope to see y'all there!

We had a lot of fun, and learned new things about bourbon vs whiskey. It was good tour, with good information. Afterwards, we sat out at a picnic table and visited. Thanks to Kirk for putting this on.

I'd hate for the $20 tour fee to have people back out. Would anyone object to postponing a couple of week for a Sunday tour at $10 instead? We could do it at 2 or 4 if we wait if that makes it any easier. Let me know asap.

  • Lindsay

I'll have to think about it at $20/person. I'm not sure I can do that. But either way I'll meet you guys at torchy's for breakfast!

  • Dr. Robin Heart S.

Da-yum! They are using the tours to advertise their whiskey, and then charging us $20 to do it? What do they give us in return? A taste of their whiskey?

    March 27, 2013

    • Kirk

I agree that $20 is pretty pricy. My fault for not noticing that sooner. But to answer your question, yes, you do get samples. I believe I mentioned this in a previous comment.

Just noticed the tour is $20 on Saturdays. I apologize for not noticing this earlier, and hope it doesn't stop anyone from attending.

I dig the whiskey, but I will be at Faire with my "clan" that day.

Hi y'all - I apologize for any confusion I may have created. I just saw Jack Allen's Kitchen doesn't open until 11am. So if you want to meet me for breakfast or carpool or following, a change in venue - let's meet at Torchy's Tacos on William Cannon (near Mopac) at 9am if you want to eat, or 10am if you want to just drive together. I'll be sure to put this in the email with my cell phone number which I intend to send out Wednesday or Thursday.

I'm a bit confused (go figure, huh?). Do we or don't we have reservations? I'd hate to drive out there and be turned away.

    March 21, 2013

    • Kirk

we do not. never said we did anywhere. it's a public tour given W-Su at 10, 12, 2 and 4. i chose the 12pm tour for us to go on together.

      March 21, 2013

  • Kirk

If you want to meet me for breakfast, caravan, and/or carpool, meet me at Jack Allen's Kitchen on Hwy 71 (West of the "Y"). I'll get there about 9am, and we'll head out 290 West to Hye at 10am. It will take about an hour to get from Jack Allen's to the distillery, and they told me to get there early for a Saturday tour. Of course you can also just meet at the distillery. I'll send out my phone number closer to the event to those who RSVP Yes.

    March 21, 2013

  • Kirk

Also, they strongly recommended getting there early for a Saturday tour as they are packed. So I'm changing the time to 11:30 (still the 12pm tour).

I went on this tour last week when a fellow whiskey-loving friend was in town for spring break. The tour lasted about an hour. They gave us samples to taste of the cooked grain, the "white dog" (new make spirit), and the final product. It was awesome and I can't wait to do it again.

Does anyone know where I can get a horse?

    1 · February 24, 2013

  • Dr. Robin Heart S.

Oh - I had 2 pm written in my book.

    February 23, 2013

  • Kirk

When I first sent I had said 2pm, but I changed it to noon, just to make sure there was enough time to get back for the movie night at 7pm.
