Celtic Movie Night: Once

Once is one of my favorite movies. Irish musician Glen Hansard and Czech singer-songwriter Marketa Irglova star in this modern take on a musical set in Dublin. If you're thinking "oh crap" b/c I just used the word "musical", forget everything you know about musicals. This is a musical for people who love music and hate musicals. It follows two singer-songwriters through their daily routines like writing, practicing, street performing and recording. This is a movie for people who love music.

If you enjoy the movie and are interested in a double feature, I also have the documentary "The Swell Season." This follows real-life Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova while they tour the world following the success of the movie Once, and their Academy Award for Best Song.

From the Wikipedia page about the film: He learns she is married, with a husband in the Czech Republic. When Guy asks if she still loves her husband, she answers in Czech, "Miluju tebe", but coyly declines to translate what she said. (Although the translation is not included in the movie, in the Czech language it means "It is you I love.")

good article, thanks. i think the cbs news clip showed he is happier now and doing much better than in the documentary. he has gone back to his roots and is even using the street busking and fame to help others.

I saw him with the Frames and the Swell Season many times. A truly humble cool guy. I even saw him in the crowd at the Snow Patrol show at Austin Music Hall when he was in town supporting Eddie Vedder.

Just so everyone is aware, the Tuesday prior to this meetup (3/26) is Kirk's birthday. SO, I'm bringing cupcakes.

Kirk, are you aware that this is the same day at the Garrison Bro. Distillery Tour?

    • Kirk

yep. i figure 2hrs most for tour + an hr to get back leaves plenty of time for those who want to do both. i also figure it might be two totally different groups.
