Starting at 11am, we'll grab a field and do fungo, work on fundamentals, do drills, etc. Starting at 1pm, likely on a separate field if the first group is still going, an informal scrimmage will begin (no score kept, no walks, no strikeouts). Folks are of course free to come and go as they like between the two groups.
Practice will be at Havins. Ramsey will be our backup plan if Havins is unavailable. If you need to map it, the address of Ramsey Park is 4301 Rosedale Ave, Austin, TX 78756. But again, practice will be at HAVINS. Ramsey is the backup plan.
There are 5 fields at Havins. If you are the first to arrive at Havins for practice, please grab a free field. If any have not been lined for games, those should be the first choices.
Feel free to show up late. We continue until people want to stop. Feel free to leave whenever you like. I recommend wearing sunscreen and bringing water. You don't *need* to bring any equipment, but I recommend you bring a fielding glove, as we have limited extras and they may not fit you well. You may also want to bring batting gloves to prevent blisters. Cleats are not needed, but they will help you avoid slipping. We have several bats, but you are welcome to bring your own. We have plenty of softballs.
Friendly people only! There is some good-natured trash talk at practice, but it's all in good fun and everyone has a good time. No negative or rude people! People of all skill levels are welcome, and both men and women are welcome.
This is the same as the Facebook group of the same name (which I highly recommend you join).
Don't let the number of RSVPs on here fool you (or on Meetup, if you are on there). Folks show up every week who don't RSVP. We never have to cancel practice due to lack of people.
Attending the practices is free, but donations are VERY appreciated. It costs around $150 per year to keep the Meetup group open (which is by far our biggest source of new people finding out about us and joining us). I suggest a $5 donation per person every 6-12 months. You can donate using Paypal from a link on the meetup group home page, or you can give Mitch cash or check at practice.
If you're new, ask for one of our practice regulars: Matt, Zook, David, Jason, Morgan, Mitch, or Tom. They can answer any questions.
If you are looking to join a team or sub for a team, either for league play or for tournaments, then you have a couple of options. There are a bunch of leagues in the area, many of which allow you to list yourself as a player looking for a team. Their web pages have details:
You can also show up to practice and get to know people there. People at practice play for a variety of different teams, so you may meet someone who is looking for players.
Periodically there will be messages sent to the group with opportunities to sub in games, play in tournaments, or join teams full time.
