    Vision Therapy for Autism

    Discussion Highlights:

-What is vision therapy and how can it help my child with autism?

-The difference between a regular eye exam and a developmental visual processing evaluation.

-The prevalence of sight problems in the autism population.

-Common visual input and perceptual problems in autism.

-Symptoms of vision problems to look out for.

-Video case presentations of vision therapy in action.

-How vision impacts academics, social skills, communication and motor coordination.

Presenter:  Susan Daniel, O.D. has been in private practice with her husband, Christopher Davis, O.D. in Carlsbad, California since 1992. She obtained her Bachelors of Science degree from the University of California at Davis in 1987 and her Doctor of Optometry degree at the Southern California College of Optometry in 1991. Her practice specializes in visual rehabilitation evaluations and therapy for brain injured and stroke patients, children with special needs, and autism.  In 2004, she opened the Sensory Learning Center, located in Oceanside, CA, which offers a multi-sensory therapy to help integrate auditory, vestibular and visual input. This therapy was instrumental in helping her son with autism say his first word at 6 years old.  Dr. Daniel enjoys sharing her personal experiences of how her vision therapy practice has been enhanced by what she has learned from the multi-disciplinary team of teachers, doctors and therapists who have helped her son, as well as from the non-verbal children and adults with autism she has had the pleasure of working with.

This group is open to all parents, professionals, and members of the community interested in improving the lives of those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders. The group's demographic includes all ages, home & out of home placements, and all "levels of functioning." There's a wealth of information to be shared by our more "seasoned" families, and it is a welcoming place for those new to the Autism diagnosis.

This meeting will run the 1st Wednesday of every month from 6:30-8:30 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

For more information, please contact one of the North County Organizers.

I am new to group. Is it typically parents only at the support group?

Hi Kimberly- This group is aimed at parents as far as the information that is presented, but we often have children in attendance. The hosts are all parents ourselves and understand that childcare is not always easily available :-)

So this is more of a lecture to learn for parents of autistic children? Not a support group?
