Making Spinnaker Go
Diana Tkachenko (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dianatkachenko) - Data Platform Engineer, Stitch Fix

At Stitch Fix, self service is extremely important to us. We strive to enable each data scientist to be productive and minimally blocked. With the tools that we build, data scientists are able to write and deploy their own dashboards and even web services. We wanted to create a repeatable process where we enable the data scientist to deploy and redeploy their application at will, unintimidated, and without our help. This is where we settled on the immutable server pattern. Because all our infrastructure is in the cloud - we are 100% on AWS - where failures occur constantly (including planned failures with Netflix’s chaos monkey), we preferred the lowest risk deployment process.

Spinnaker gives users greater ability to self manage their applications. Since Spinnaker is a new and rather complex application built for scalability, it took some time to iron out all the kinks. In this talk, I will walk through how to install and deploy Spinnaker into an AWS infrastructure, sharing the snags and stumbles encountered along the way. My hope is this talk will save time for people who are already setting up, or are interested in setting up Spinnaker for their purposes.
