Prestwick Airport Tour

Details

Prestwick Aviation organise walking tours of Prestwick airport. This is a 2 mile tour and starts at 1.30pm for a couple of hours. The cost is £15 or £12 if you are over 65. Please RSVP and pay by Friday 18th July 2025 at the latest.

1913 - 1945
From the Pioneer Cafe, Monkton we will move to the end of Main Street, Monkton which overlooks the main Prestwick runway with views over to the 'old' and 'new' airports. We'll relate the tales of the early bi-plane beginnings in 1913 through the 20s and 30s pleasure and mail flights, to the major developments and events that took place prior to, and up to the end of World War 2. We pay tribute to the airfield's founders, Douglas Douglas-Hamilton and David McIntyre.

1946 - 1963
We will proceed to the back of the old Scottish Aviation site (still very active today) and tell the story of Scottish Aviation and the huge role it played in WW2 and in shaping the future of Prestwick Airport. From there we will walk up to HMS Gannet and Green-site where we can inform you of the roles the US Air Force and the Royal Navy have played in Scotland over the years. We might even mention Elvis.

1963 - Present Day
From Green Site we will wander back towards the Cafe stopping off mid way to relate some more 'tales' and then stop at the Main Street end once again to take you through the events from 1963 to the present day. We'll tell the story of amazing plans for the airport post war and the transition from the old airport at Orangefield to the present terminal together with the impact of the various owners of the airport to date. Tales of political posturing, and skullduggery intertwined with entrepreneurial flair, resilience and success!
