  • azPHP - PHP on Kubernetes & GitHub Actions

    Online event

This month, Luther will show us how to run a PHP app using Kubernetes (K8s). As a bonus, he will also show us how deployments can be performed via GitHub Actions.

    Abstract:
Take a deep dive into containerizing a php/nginx application end to end from the basics to deploying to Kubernetes. We will move through looking at the php docker images, docker-compose for local development and continuous deployment examples using github actions to push your images to Kubernetes dynamically using helm3.

    About the Presenter:
Luther is a Staff Software Engineer at SUSE working on the backend of Rancher2 and doing enterprise Kubernetes engineering support. Even though his time today mostly gets spent abusing docker and writing in go, he began his career as a php developer 15yrs ago and still maintains php applications.

  • azPHP - Building Slack Apps in PHP

    Online event

This month, Jeremy Lindblom will speak about building Slack apps using PHP.

We'll build a simple Slack app in the first 5 minutes. Though building a simple Slack† application is not too difficult, there are many more details to consider once you go beyond a "Hello, world!". Additionally, Slack's protocols and provided tools are not particularly favorable to PHP developers. Jeremy will show us the essentials of Slack app development and showcase some open source tools for PHP developers that might help you on your way.

About the Presenter: Jeremy is a principal software engineer at McGraw Hill, an education-technology company. Outside of work, Jeremy likes to work on OSS PHP libraries, play video games, sing, and play with his 4 kids.

***Due to COVID-19, all meetups are hosted online via Zoom until further notice. Zoom links are not posted until near the start time of the event.***

†Slack is a well-known messaging/collaboration application that provides a whole suite of integrated tools, as well as ways for developers to create additional custom tools.

  • azPHP - E2E Testing in Symfony with PHPUnit

    Online event

This month, Peter Adams will present show us how to end-to-end (E2E) Testing in Symfony with PHPUnit.

In addition to crafting PHPUnit tests that cover all the events that take place when a particular request is made, I'll cover different tools (both built-in and external to Symfony) to verify configuration, templates, and check for known vulnerabilities in dependencies. We'll also point out similar tools and commands, where they exist, in Laravel. I'll also talk about some of the limitations I've found with this specific testing implementation.

About the Presenter: Peter has been a professional Web developer for over 20 years, working primarily in PHP with brief forays into Java and .NET. For the past 9 years, he currently runs Sol Minion Development, the software development and consulting company he founded in 2012. In addition to PHP software development, he is an avid tabletop gamer, mountain biker, and motorcyclist.
