CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER FORECAST - Snowshoe at Second Creek on Berthoud Pass

  • This location is shown only to members

Second Creek Trailhead is a moderate to difficult ungroomed snowshoe trail, but usually packed down due to the amount of snowshoe traffic. Staring elevation is 10,580 ending at 11,800, so quite an elevation gain. We will follow the trail for a total of 4-5 miles and then return to the hut day use area where we'll have lunch.

Optional Overnighter: Click here if you want to stay overnight in the hut and follow the instructions to make a reservation.

As of this posting, there are 8 spots left

Directions to Trailhead: I-70 West to the Empire Exit. Drive towards Berthoud Pass and watch for the trailhead on the left side once you pass the Berthoud Pass Summit.

Carpooling: Meet at 9:00am at Wooly Mammoth, Section CC where we'll form some carpools. The parking lot is located at I-70 West, Morrison Exit 259. If you're attending the hut trip too, be sure your carpoolers are doing the same!

Lunch - bring a lunch to eat at the indoor hut day use area located on the Second Creek Trail. Also, feel free to bring a little something to share with the group - a special drink or snack.

See you there!

HEADS UP! There's a winter storm warning for Grand County above 9,000 feet which could affect our snowshoe! The warning is in effect 5pm Tuesday until 5pm Thursday. The NWS issued a winter storm warning for snow and blowing snow becoming more widespread and heavier Wednesday into Thursday. 6-18 inches likely by Thursday afternoon with heaviest amounts on northwest facing slopes. Northwest winds will increase to 20-35 mph with gusts to 50 mph over the ridges late tonight and continue into Thursday reducing visibility to near zero at times over higher exposed areas.

So with that said, let's play it by ear. Plan on meeting Thursday morning at Wooly Mammoth unless I post an update tomorrow afternoon. P.S. I still want to drive up and see for myself how bad it really is!
