Fox Cities Backpackers Pages

Our group is dedicated to all aspects of Backpacking. This includes sharing local backpacking ideas, discussing gear, meeting potential hiking partners, and getting new backpackers out on the trail!!

Who runs this group?

This is a group of people who like to hike, camp and backpack. The organizers keep the group running and post events, but each person in the group is responsible for their own actions. There is no one "in charge" of you at any of our events. If someone starts telling you what to do and you don’t agree with it, don’t do it. Use your own common sense and leave the event if you think it is too risky for your taste.

So who are Shannon, Mary, and Melanie? Who are the other organizers? Are they in charge?

They run the group Meetup site and Facebook page. They can post calendar entries and moderate the message board, as can the other organizers. A moderator manages content, and makes sure things stay on topic and are appropriate.

What are the rules?

Group leadership is not here to dictate how you participate in the group. Membership is open to all types of people of any skill level or ability. We will do our best to make reasonable accommodations for members of all types.

Beyond that we ask that group members observe the following code of conduct:

  • Be Safe – Do not endanger yourself or others.
  • Be Responsible – Your actions affect the group as a whole, and we want to be seen as stewards of the areas we frequent.
  • Be Respectful and Tolerant – We expect all group members to treat each other with respect and tolerance, we will not accept denigration, bigotry, racism, or sexism of any type.
  • Be Courteous – We have limited trip slots and resources. Do not take a spot on a trip "just in case". This is especially important for beginner trips to give members with less experience a chance to advance.

In addition this group practices Leave No Trace backpacking, and we try to adhere to the 7 principles of Leave No Trace backpacking.

  • plan ahead and prepare
  • travel and camp on durable surfaces
  • dispose of waste properly
  • leave what you find
  • minimize campfire impacts
  • respect wildlife
  • be considerate of other visitors
