Fall Hiking on the SHT (Advanced)

  • Sep 27, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • Superior Hiking Trail

The Superior Hiking Trail follows the shoreline of Lake Superior in Minnesota. I've been doing a lot of research on this trail and am looking forward to doing a section of it. I'm picking a section that is known for exceptional vistas and also encompasses some waterfalls.

I'm thinking this trip will require a long weekend (Friday and Monday for travel) as it will take 6-7 hours to get to the trailhead from Appleton, however, this is open to discussion. I would prefer to do two full days of hiking given the distance to get there.  A shuttle service is available that I will look into. Depending on how many people are interested, splitting the cost may be a better option than shuttling vehicles to save time.

Mileage between Saturday and Sunday will be at least 25. The trail profile is extremely challenging (this section is one of the most difficult) and I want to be able to take our time to enjoy the views as well.

I'd like to get some feedback on people's availability to take off of work and also on the dates. I would prefer to schedule this for the weekend of September 27 to hit the colors at their peak. Another week later and it may be past peak. I know there is already a trip scheduled that weekend, however, that trip is full so this may give other advanced members the opportunity to do a fall hike. Anyway, I welcome your feedback!

Sorry gang, I'll post pics as soon as I can. My laptop met an unfortunate ending when I dropped it Monday night. Once I get a new laptop, I will post.

Great trip. Thanks for organizing Mary!

I would definitely do another trip up to the SHT again. Would do 3-4 days instead of the 2 but still well worth the drive.

I always love hiking up there especially when the colors are in full bloom

      Agreed!

Great trip! Worth the drive and worth a repeat for some more sections of the trail.

    Hi Everyone,

There's a pretty good chance we're going to get rain on Sat :( but Sun looks good :) Beau, Michelle, Matt and myself will be leaving Appleton Friday morning at 9:00. Catherine will be there Thursday so she graciously offered to get our sites at Split Rock. I'll get the word out on the sites when I hear from her. Heidi lives in MN so she's going to meet us at the Split Rock Visitor Center around 6:00. Hopefully we'll get the sites and can set up and hang out. If not, we'll wait for Heidi and then head over to Eckbeck. I'm going to bring a tri-pod for Fri night for anyone to use if you want to cook something other than a backpack meal! Have a safe drive and see you on Fri!

Should we pick up firewood for Friday nite and Sunday night or will we scavenge or do you have it covered?

      September 25, 2013

    • Mary

We can pick up wood at the park for both nights. I'll bring my collapsible cart to use to bring it into the campsite on Sun so we won't have to scavenge that night.

So far for the carpool I have Michelle, Mary, Matt, Jason and myself. Everyone still in? Hopefully I didn't miss anyone??

I'm carpooling for three different trips and need to keep them all straight lol

      See you at 9!

Did we make a decision as far as sharing equipment (stove, fuel, water purifier, etc?) Also, just wondering what the plan is for carpooling? Where and when would you like us to meet you Brian?Getting excited :-)

    September 23, 2013

    • Brian P.

Kevin; Jason said he can leave anytime Friday. How soon do you want to head out?

      September 24, 2013

    • Kevin

Hey Brian. I can leave anytime on Friday as well. Sounds like we have a bit of a drive so the earlier the better. I will send you my email and cell info now.

      September 24, 2013

  • Heather

I'm not going to be able to go on the trip. I have a family emergency out of state and won't be back in time for the hike. Have fun everyone!

Sorry we will miss you. Hope all is well and that we see you on another trip.

I've done the SHT from the northern terminus down to Two Harbors. If you need any advice I would be happy to share. Also, my hiking website has tons of photos of my trips. Visit it at htpp://sites.google.com/site/isawtman/

    September 12, 2013

    • Brian P.

Todd; Thanks. I skimmed your journals and looked through you photos. Looks great. I didn't see any extreme ascents or descents. Is there anyplace on the SHT that I would need to get out my pitons and ropes to stay on the trail?

      September 12, 2013

  • Brian P.

Mary; Has the jump-in point on the SHT been determined yet?

    September 7, 2013

    • Mary

I'll get the itinerary out this week.

Since I'm coming from Chicago I'm going to take Friday off work. Can I meet someone in WI and carpool from there?

    August 28, 2013

    • Heather

It looks like Appleton is about a 3 hour drive for me. As long as you are not leaving crazy early on Friday that will work. I absolutely have to be back in Chicago no later than 4 pm on Monday. Let me know if that works for the two of you. Thanks!

      August 29, 2013

    • Brian P.

Depending upon where Mary settles for the hike it is about 6 hours from Appleton to the SHT. Ideally I guess we would leave Appleton 10a or 11a on Friday to be up there around dinner. We would need to leave the SHT by 8am Monday to get you back to Chicago around 4:00p -- which is not a problem for me but we should make sure this is no issue for Kevin.

      August 29, 2013

  • Brian P.

With the challenging profile we discussed last night that perhaps not everyone of the group has to bring water purification, stoves, wood saw, etc. What other things might we be able to share so we can cut pack weight? I could keep track of who brings what if we have a list of community items and how many we need to for a group of 11.

    August 11, 2013

    • Brian P.

      Anything else we can share?

      August 25, 2013

    • Matt W.

FYI my stove is an alcohol stove

      August 25, 2013

  • Kevin

I would also be looking to carpool from the Appleton area. Anyone have room....I'm "mostly" harmless.

    July 24, 2013

    • Brian P.

Kevin I will be driving from Appleton and my crew cab comfortably fits four with loads of stowage.

      July 24, 2013

    • Kevin

      Great, thanks for the offer.

      July 25, 2013

  • Catherine E.

Mary, do you know what section you are thinking of hiking?

    July 24, 2013

    • Mary

For sure the Silver Bay to Tettagouche State Park section. That's 11.1 miles of pretty challenging trail. I'm still looking at the sections at both ends of it to see which would work out best. I'm trying to work it so we're at the group campsites and don't have to split up into single ones although there are groups of single campsites that would work as well. The days will be shorter then so I don't want to bite off too much trail!

      July 24, 2013

  • Jason P.

Mary, are you still considering increasing the attendee limit? We filled up pretty fast!

    July 24, 2013

    • Mary

I will add the 3 waiting and then call it a day!

      July 24, 2013

  • Jason P.

I'd like to carpool if possible from Oshkosh, Appleton or GB. I'll jump in with someone else or we can take mine but my capacity is four in my Honda Accord. Four packs in the trunk can be a bit of a squeeze. :-)

    July 23, 2013

    • Jason P.

Thanks Brian. What do you think Beau? I know 5 in a pickup can be kinda tight on a long ride!

      July 24, 2013

    • Beau B.

It's a pretty big truck and the people going aren't very big so we should have plenty of room for a fifth.

      July 24, 2013

  • Catherine E.

Sounds awesome! I am interested and will be in the Hayward area the previous week. I would probably travel from there. For all of you backpackers, I have spent the ENTIRE month of July being sick. I just found out that it is Lyme's disease. It really takes life away from you ( I have spent a lot of time laying around or in bed!) so keep taking precautions to avoid contracting it. That includes bug spray and tucking pants into socks....Antibiotics will help me recover in the next few weeks-can't wait to get back on the trail and into my kayak!

    July 23, 2013

    • Mary

Sorry to hear that you've been sick. Hopefully you'll be able to join us soon!

      July 23, 2013

    • Jason P.

Wow! Sorry to hear that Catherine. I hope you're back on your feet soon! I've heard that Lyme's disease can be a real battle unless it's caught right away.

      July 23, 2013

  • Beau B.

This will be as close as i come to Isle Royale this year :) I should be able to take off Friday and Monday. Have room for 3-4 more in the truck for carpool

    July 23, 2013

    • Matt W.

I'll take a spot in the carpool, thanks.

      July 23, 2013

    • Beau B.

I'll save spots for all three of you :)

      July 23, 2013

  • Matt W.

    Mary,
Your timing is perfect. Colors should be good and it's the Packers bye week. You Rock!! Also I'm interested in carpooling.

I knew I wanted this weekend but totally forgot to check the Packer schedule ... can't believe I forgot! This is a bonus then!

      July 23, 2013

Ouch. Same weekend as Governor Dodge meetup I already accepted :-( If you pushed this back a week or two I woudl be all over it.

FYI Pictured Rocks is still a go Brian. Ken was at the meeting yesterday and confirmed that he's still posting it for Labor Day weekend.

Fyi, I limited the number of people to 8, however I'm certainly willing to change that. Thanks for all of the interest!

Hi Mary, Patty and I would be very intersested in joining on this hike, we have hiked the SHT from Gooseberry to Hwy 1, very pretty country lots of waterfalls and rivers, we plan to segment hike the 300 miles to Canada, I will check updates to see if we can do the dates. we did use the shuttle service when we were there last year, very organized and right on time, but for the two of us it was kind of expensive.

    1 · July 23, 2013

  • Jason P.

I would be able to take both Friday and Monday off if necessary. That would be preferable to to hiking all day then making such a long drive back. I also agree that the shuttle service makes sense. I wish I had stuck with that option on another recent trip!

    July 23, 2013

  • Chris S.

I would be very interested in going. I love the SHT and have hiked many of the sections and love it there. I have never tried the shuttle service and have looked at it. I think I have a flyer at home from when I was there in May.

In terms of travel It would be nice to do a long weekend but I sadly don't have any vacation left for the year so that wouldn't be available to me, but I don't have an issue with getting back very late on Sunday.

    July 23, 2013

  • Melanie

Sounds like a great trip! I'll see what I can do as far as getting that much time off (Since my wedding will be not too long after) I'll let you know though!
