BarCamp Gold Coast IX

Usual Barcamp format - feel free to come and talk about anything you like, doesn't have to be IT, we always get a very diverse crowd so someone will listen! Barcamp motto : "No Spectators, only participants!"

This wikipedia page describes what Barcamps are. There is also an article written on a Barcamp at Bond Uni and an associated factsheet.

We're holding the event at the Gold Coast TechSpace again. The Space has continued to evolve since our last Barcamp and is proving a great place to hold them.

We are usually back into warm spring weather by mid August, so visitors from Down South can come and thaw out.

Talks are quite strictly limited to 10 mins in the morning and 20 mins in the afternoon. Try and plan your talk to last half of the time so there is time for questions. The schedule for the formal "presentation area" is :

  • 10 Coffee - chat - setup
  • 10:30 Speed Intro
  • 11:00 Lightning Talks 1
  • 11:10 Lightning Talks 2
  • 11:20 Lightning Talks 3
  • 11:30 Lightning Talks 4
  • 11:40 Lightning Talks 5
  • 11:50 Lightning Talks 6
  • 12:00 Lunch
  • 1:00 Talk 1
  • 1:20 Talk 2
  • 1:40 Talk 3
  • 2:00 Talk 4
  • 2:20 Break
  • 2:40 Talk 5
  • 3:00 Talk 6
  • 3:20 Talk 7
  • 3:40 Talk 8
  • 4 end

Apart from that - the day is yours, so if you have anything you would like to talk to people about, this is a great place to do so, informally during the Speed Intro, or lead/present one of the Talk sessions.

A few things that have been prearranged again:

  1. Our "Show and Tell" table where you can bring anything that you want to show off. If you have anything commercial - it would be best if you show this here rather than taking up talk slots.
  2. Prizes :-). You need to be RSVPd YES to be eligible for a prize though
  3. Takeaway food and coffee: - there is an excellent cafe/takeaway right next to us.
  4. In addition we plan to provide lunch from sponsorship.

Please note that there is a $2/person fee to attend, or $5 per family. This is to help fund the rent of the Space. Please pay when you arrive at the entry desk and collect your name sticker.

Membership of the hosting association, Gold Coast TechSpace, is $40/month ($20 concessions) so this is a great opportunity for local techs to come take and look with a view to joining. (See

-1 for the smaller turnout, however +2 for the excellent participation rate, and +1 for more "general interest" talks, IMO.
ps Hamish had a great time too; was quite tuckered out & slept soundly when we got home.

A very interesting mix of attendees even with the relatively low turnout. Food and coffee sponsorships were excellent. With a tighter adherence to schedule and 2 dozen attending we could do a 2-5 pm session every 2 months with only coffee and cakes needed.

Great day. Good talks, just the right amount of people. -1 star because it would have been nice to have concurrent talks. Adds a bit of tension ..."which one will I go to?"
