Officials detail "Secretariat" project
Amanda McElfresh • • September 17, 2009

A casting session will be held Sept. 27 at the Cajundome for the Disney movie “Secretariat,” which is being filmed in the Lafayette area.

Up to 4,000 extras are needed for the film, officials said during a Thursday press conference. The casting will last from noon to 8 p.m. Further details are expected to be released in the next several days.

About 200 crew members are needed for the film, which tells the life story of Penny Chenery, owner of the horse that won the Triple Crown in 1973. Bill Johnson, the movie’s executive producer, said about 75 percent of those positions already are filled. Of those, about 10 to 15 are from Lafayette, and about 55 to 60 are from Louisiana.

The movie’s scenes will be shot throughout the Lafayette area, including downtown and the former Evangeline Downs racetrack in Carencro. The film’s production will be based in Lafayette, and editing for the project will be done at the LITE Center.

Movie executives said that while the state’s film tax credits initially drew them to Louisiana, the culture of Acadiana made them want to locate here, both for “Secretariat” and future projects.

“To come the first night, you think ‘we’re going to be here such a long time,’” said the film’s director, Randall Wallace. “Then within a few nights you’re saying, ‘we’re going to be here such a short time.’” It’s about that kind of spirit.”

LAFAYETTE — Sound stages and production offices are being set up for the filming of "Secretariat," a movie by Walt Disney and Mayhem Pictures that will star Diane Lane, John Malkovich and Nelsan Ellis.

The movie will chronicle the life story of Penny Chenery, owner of the racehorse that won the Triple Crown in 1973. Filming in Lafayette is slated to begin Oct. 12 and will continue through the end of November.

Casting agents are looking for people to serve as background extras and two young girls to play a young Chenery — who will be portrayed by Lane. The girls, ages 6 and 13, must have light to medium blonde hair and the ability to take instruction from directors.

Headshots and resumes are being accepted through Friday at
