Director Jia Zhangke, who was just honored with a retrospective at SF MOMA, returns to the theme of today's changing China with his latest film, a tragic romance set in the emerging Chinese underworld...

Master filmmaker Jia Zhangke, who gave us Still Life, A Touch of Sin, Mountains May Depart, The World and Unknown Pleasures, once again reveals insights into the dizzying pace of changing life in contemporary China with an epic tale of love and crime. Told in three distinct sections spanning nearly two decades, Ash Is Purest White is the story of a quick-witted woman named Qiao (Zhao Tao), who is in love with Bin (Liao Fan), a local mobster. During a fight between rival gangs, she fires a gun to protect him. Qiao gets five years in prison for this act of loyalty, and upon her release she goes looking for Bin to pick up where they left off. Winner of the Best Actress and Best Director awards at the Chicago International Film Festival. (Fully subtitled) 137 mins.
