Gear & Anchor Course presented by the Outdoor Adventure Club

Our friends at the Outdoor Adventure Club offer various climbing safety classes that are conducted in the Bay Area. These are formal classes with professional trained AMGA guides. As such, these are not free events but highly recommended for brushing up or learning new skills to climb safely. They have generously offered up OAC member prices for Meetup members. Read the details below but for any additional questions regarding this class and other OAC classes, please contact Richard at [masked].

Class information:
This all day, hands on course is designed for anyone who is climbing outdoors. This is very much a "hands on" course, and by the end of the day you will have the knowledge to be able to set up top rope anchors in a variety of situations. Throughout the day you will learn the components of a solid anchor and practice constructing anchors under the watchful eye of a professional climbing guide. This class will take people who have never built an anchor and prepare them to build anchors on their own, but climbers with more experience building anchors always gain more knowledge from this class, too.

Everyone in the class will get to keep a cordolette, too!

Climbing is limited, if at all on this class. You can bring (or we can provide) shoes, harness and helmet, but you'll get more use out of a Crazy Creek chair than climbing shoes today.

What you'll learn:
*How to build anchors in a variety of situations, using bolts, cracks, trees, etc.
*Knots- clove hitch, water knot, double fisherman's, bunny ears
*Differences and properties of cord and webbing, and when to use one over the other
*Differences and properties of nylon and Spectra® and when to use one over the other
*How things fail- so you learn what not to do!
*How to place gear and critique a gear placement
*How to extend anchors
*What to look for in other people's anchors before you trust them!

What's provided:
*A full day of instruction from an AMGA or MLTE trained guide
*All the climbing gear and equipment necessary for the course
*Course handout with valuable information, including a recommended gear list for setting up your own anchors
* A cordolette you can keep and use for your own anchors after the class!

Things to bring:
*We provide all climbing gear necessary for the course. You are welcome to bring your own anchoring gear if you wish, but please have it clearly marked.
*lunch and water for the day
*Dress in layers. Castle Rock can be sweltering or chilly
*A notebook and pen

$99 for OAC members and Meetup members (To get the discounted price, RSVP through meetup, and I will contact you)
$119 for non-members

Invaluable experience. Richard & Duane from OAC were excellent instructors, keeping the day busy, chock full of useful information and incredibly helpful tricks, and still lots of fun.

Fantastic class. I learned so much, and enjoyed every minute of it! And now I have a solid foundation to build on as I go outside and start setting my own anchors, read up on other techniques, and so on.

Now if only Richard and Duane could train my dog to be a good belay partner... I can't wait to check out other classes and trips with OAC on their website!
