Say, any open source voter info tools from NYC that might be shared nationally in 2014? (Nyc links below)

I'd like to see a candidate information syndication system using creative commons that allowed candidates to share from one secure system:

1. Full candidate contact info
2. Comprehensive social media links
3. An updateable candidate photo
4. Open text statements of 140 characters, 500 characters, and 5000 characters
5. A two page pdf of whatever the candidate wants
6. A youtube/other video link of up to two minutes, and up to ten minutes
7. One minute candidate-only audio statement mp3 (to encourage simple talking ballot apps)
8. Campaign finance, ethics, and other advertising claim links

The system would also create unique ID for every candidate in the nation (perhaps the Google civic info api will do this).

The system would require sites creating voter guides from the content to credit/link to the source as well as allow voter guides to contibute content back to the system for syndication.  I'd like to see local voter guides be able to share their small candidate profiles with larger networks with credit links back to the source.

See the gdoc spreadsheet from - http://e-democracy.org/mpls13 - for a sampling of all the social media fields one might collect.

Ideally the system would be a gov/media public good collaboration that would be officially adopted by state and local election offices and campaign finance offices. In the 1990s I convinced the MN Secretary of State and later our campaign finance office to add an email and web address fields to get this info out for voter guide and other use. It is almost 20 years since a ragtag group of MN volunteers create the world's first election website and online candidate debate - http://e-democracy.org/1994 - today's guides need to take it up a step in innovation. It is time to unleash some creativity by essentially turning the voter guide base into an open data set so competition for eyeballs is based on innovation not exclusivity based on sweat from the exhausting act of gathering the data.

Chris,

My apologies. You have a great site and I should have included it.

Sorry for the self-promotion on this list, but I think it's in support of a greater cause.

I run another election resource for NYC voters: http://www.whosontheballot.org

And, Common Cause has a web app http://www.pollwatch.us/ that they're encouraging folks to use in an effort to crowdsource poll site monitoring.

Happy voting!
