This ride can be broken down into two short rides over trails we've done many times.
We'll head over to the SDCT and turn right, staying on the trail to Laguna Canyon Road. Turn right, over the freeway to Quail Hills Parkway, another right and to the Starbucks in the shopping center for a short break. Leaving Starbucks we carefully head for the Quail Hills Trail, using the bike path and being very mindful of traffic around the circle. Stay on the bike trail to and through William Mason Park, then across University at Harvard and back on the SDCT and down to the Back Bay.
At Bonita Creek Park Tail you can turn and head back to the start and the cars, for a ride of just under 17 miles. If not stopping at this point, continue down the SDCT and around the bay, clockwise, and turn right on Eastbluff Drive. Another right on Back Bay Drive, fly down the hill and keep crankin' to Newport Dunes where we'll take the pontoon bridge across the water to Bayside Drive. Right at PCH and again at Dover, then up to Castaways Park -- be in your low, low gears for this short climb. A quick stop at the USMC statue, then continue on the trail to Santiago Drive. Make a right turn on Galaxy, wind around and back to Santiago, then turn right to Irvine Ave. A right on Irvine Avenue for about 100 feet, then back on the bike trail to complete the loop of the Back Bay. A short hop up the SDCT to Bonita Park Trail and back to the cars, 27.7 miles total.
As always, be sure to bring your helmet, water, snacks, and a spare tube. We leave at 8:30 sharp, so please be on time! Take a good look at the route map, and zoom in on any areas in which you need to see detail -- remember, YOU are responsible for knowing the route.
