Update: Unfortunately the pandemic hit right after the first event for this group was scheduled. For everyone's safety that event was cancelled, and planning for future events have been put on hold for the time being. Ways to connect remotely are currently being explored.
This group is for Black LGBTQ+ folx in the Ann Arbor, Detroit, and surrounding areas. It will center the needs and voices of those with a lived black and queer experience.
Black allies that may identify as queer in a broader sense of the word (queer relating / non-monogamous / polyamorous / relationship anarchist / etc) are also welcome.
The intersectionality of oppression experienced by a black & queer identity can be particularly painful and isolating. Many queer spaces and alternative communities are predominantly white. Whether from subtle (and sometimes overt) racism, fetishization, or simply experiencing discomfort at being the “only pepper in the salt-shaker”—navigating a community as one of a few token blacks can sometimes be a heavy burden.
The purpose of this group is to create spaces where black & queer folx can get together to release that burden, seek support, connect, have fun, play, and build community without feeling like an Other.
The kinds of social events you can expect to see here: queer ecstatic dances, authentic relating games & connection events, socials, group outings, cuddle parties, music jams, and more!
