Unlearning internalized Harmful Messages from the Black Church Experience
Details
There are messages many of us didn’t just hear—we absorbed.
Messages about who we were supposed to be… how we were supposed to think, feel, speak, and even exist within our own bodies and identities.
For many Black survivors of religious trauma, these messages were shaped within the Black Church experience—an experience that can hold both deep cultural meaning and deep wounds.
Over time, some of those messages didn’t stay outside of us… they became the voice within us.
The voice that questions us.
The voice that corrects us.
The voice that tells us we’re wrong, out of order, too much—or not enough.
In this support group, we will discuss:
- What messages did I internalize?
- How are they still showing up in my inner voice?
And what does it look like to begin unlearning what no longer serves me?
Together, we’ll reflect, share, and begin the process of loosening the grip of harmful internalized messages… so we can make room for something more compassionate, more grounded, and more ours.
You don’t have to have it all figured out to show up. Just come as you are!
