It's time to get out of the city and test our cold weather gear. What better way than an overnight backpacking trip in Harriman State Park.
This will be a COLD weather overnight trip and is appropriate for experienced backcountry campers that have the fitness, winter gear and know-how to overnight in mountainous bear country, but who may not have much experience doing it during the winter. Everyone will be expected to have all necessary winter gear and food.
This is particularly a great opportunity for new members to test their gear and experience while becoming familiar with BLAZE>>.
The exact location and length of the hike has not yet been selected. This will be a difficult hike because of the expected total elevation gain and the fact that everyone will be carrying heavy backpacks (some heavier than others). This will, necessarily, require that all participants be in good physical condition.
The plan will be to leave the NYC area on 12/01 at 8 a.m. sharp, drive to the Harriman and meet at a pre-designated location. It's important to be timely, since we will need to get to camp before sundown.
The exact location and length of the hike has not yet been selected. It may either be a loop or a through hike. Regardless, this will be a difficult hike because of the expected total elevation gain and the fact that everyone will be carrying heavy backpacks (some heavier than others). This will, necessarily, require that all participants be in good physical condition.
To give you an idea what kind of gear you may need, see this general gear list (http://files.meetup.com/1288466/GENERAL%20GEAR%20CHECKLIST.pdf).
As to costs, you can expect to pay up to $20 per person to your driver to cover gas and toll. On the way back, we may also stop for dinner, so bring some cash with you.
Please note that when you RSVP you will automatically be placed on a waiting list. As cars become available we will move you from the wait list. As long as there are enough drivers there is no limit on the number of attendees. We will discuss organization of this hike over e-mails and spreadsheets. We will e-mail the participants more detailed instructions individually. Please e-mail me if you have any questions.
Looking forward to it!
