{"id":1429,"date":"2022-09-13T08:59:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T12:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/54.164.36.247\/blog\/?p=1429"},"modified":"2022-09-13T08:58:11","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T12:58:11","slug":"finding-the-brass-krewe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/finding-the-brass-krewe\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding the Brass Krewe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever been on a sports team, in a theater troupe or a collegiate club of some kind, you may know that feeling of family that comes with spending a lot of time with people who are as passionate about something as you are.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As adults, we don\u2019t often get opportunities to be a part of those tight-knit communities like we had in our school years. New York\u2019s \u201cL Train Brass Band\u201d Meetup group started when a self-labeled \u2018band dork\u2019 wanted to resurrect the good old days of marching band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Missing the magic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan Hall created a Meetup group because he missed being an active musician. \u201cI loved every minute of being in marching band in high school and being a part of a big group like that. It inspired me to study music in college, which was also a lot of band shenanigans and band jokes and just being around fun-loving musicians 24\/7.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast-forward a few years, Ryan got his master\u2019s degree in administration and eventually fell out of the music community. It was in 2016, while working at an HR technology advisory firm, that it really started to affect him. \u201cI found myself really missing that creative, fun, weird part of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1120\" height=\"630\" src=\"http:\/\/54.164.36.247\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade5.jpg 1120w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade5-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade5-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1120px) 100vw, 1120px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A band of one&#8230;then two&#8230;then fifty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan scheduled Meetup event inviting music lovers to meet at a bar to talk about New Orleans jazz. \u201cThe first event was almost a failure,\u201d he remembered. \u201cI say almost because two people showed up. One is still in the group.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so he tried again. At the second event Ryan met Dave, a professional trombonist. \u201cDave felt my frustration of having this energy and excitement for music but no one to play with. He mentioned we should try an event where everyone brings their instrument and we play together.\u201d One week later, they hosted a third event in Dave\u2019s basement in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quickly Ryan and Dave realized that getting people in a room actually <em>doing things<\/em> was their group\u2019s key to success. In a matter of weeks they gained another trombone player, a trumpet player, and eventually more horn players and drummers. Soon they reached a tipping point in Dave\u2019s basement and moved to a local park. Even then, the band kept growing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe got to the point where we were no longer just an interest group, we were an actual band organization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"http:\/\/54.164.36.247\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ltrainpark.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ltrainpark.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ltrainpark-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/ltrainpark-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The band has around 100 dues-paying members, sees an average of 40 of them at rehearsal each week, and is a registered nonprofit organization complete with a board and all sorts of committees. The L Train Brass Band has played at hundreds of events, including parades, music festivals, nightclubs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oU4utAlkt7w\">The Today Show<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women play an important role in the band&#8217;s organization and make up the majority of the leadership board. Women members started their own Meetup group, &#8220;Brass Queens,&#8221; when they realized there was enough instrumentation to have a ladies-only band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1120\" height=\"630\" src=\"http:\/\/54.164.36.247\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade2.jpg 1120w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade2-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1120px) 100vw, 1120px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex Harris, a founding member of the L Train Brass Band who handles the bookings, says they don\u2019t even need to try to get gigs anymore. \u201cMeetup is really good for search results, so when people search for \u2018brass band in New York,\u2019 we\u2019re one of the first to come up.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1120\" height=\"630\" src=\"http:\/\/54.164.36.247\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade6.jpg 1120w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade6-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade6-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1120px) 100vw, 1120px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pilgrimage to the Church of Jazz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a New Orleans-style brass band, the group often dreamed of visiting their mecca. When they finally planned a trip together last year, about 30 members said they were in. \u201cWe wanted to go to immerse ourselves and learn more about the kind of music we say we love to play,\u201d said Alex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group marched in the annual Mardi Gras Krewe Delusion parade, played jazz on the streets, and took a master class at Preservation Hall, the historic jazz venue. \u201cNot just anybody can walk into Preservation Hall,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cIt\u2019s like the church of jazz. The fact that we have access to these things tells you about the power of this community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band\u2019s membership has doubled since the first trip to New Orleans, and it also marked a turning point in solidifying the bonds within the community. \u201cAcquaintances became friends, friends became best friends,\u201d said Ryan.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1120\" height=\"630\" src=\"http:\/\/54.164.36.247\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/band-1-1120x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/band-1-1120x630.jpg 1120w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/band-1-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/band-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/band-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/band-1-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1120px) 100vw, 1120px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part of the Krewe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now an annual tradition, the band upped the ante this year and added more activities to their agenda, like a cultural music exchange with a local school district and a black history tour of New Orleans. There was even an \u201cextremely optional\u201d agenda item to go get tattoos, for those interested (eight members participated). In total, about 60 members flew down to New Orleans for the trip, as well as some friends of the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMarching with them and dancing through the French Quarter is a feeling I can\u2019t describe,\u201d said Ervin, a friend of the band who tagged along for the trip. \u201cThere is truly something special about the community they\u2019ve created. Even though I\u2019m not a member, I still felt the support of this big community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1120\" height=\"630\" src=\"http:\/\/54.164.36.247\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade.jpg 1120w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/parade-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1120px) 100vw, 1120px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan\u2019s dream of recreating the community he had in his school days has become something unique in of itself.
