Calusa Heritage Trail + Getaway Cafe
Details
Join us for our first event, a peaceful and educational walk along the Calusa Heritage
Trail, a beautiful archaeological and historical site located in
Bokeelia on Pine Island. This 0.9-mile interpretive trail winds
through one of the most important ancient Calusa settlements in
Southwest Florida.
As we walk, we’ll move through elevated shell mounds, historic
mangrove shorelines, and quiet tropical hammock. Interpretive signs
along the way share stories of the Calusa people—their engineering,
culture, fishing practices, and deep connection to the surrounding
estuary.
This trail is flat, easy, and suitable for all fitness levels, with
plenty of shaded areas and opportunities to enjoy nature, learn local
history, and connect with others.
- There is no fee to walk the trail, but there is a suggested donation.
We can also extend the walk on the road and loop around if we like.
What to expect:
- A relaxed, conversational walking pace
- Beautiful views of Pine Island Sound and native coastal habitat
- A chance to learn about ancient Calusa life and archaeology
- Coffee/tea/food and hangout afterward at the Getaway Cafe in St. James City. https://maps.app.goo.gl/PDdyckKZd7h2Nazm9

Looking forward to meeting you!
