Book Discussion: The Redbreast - by Jo Nesbø

http://stevebetz.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/the-redbreast.jpeg

And now for something a little bit different..... We've never done a crime novel before but this one is acclaimed as a best of genre - so how better to try something new? Here's the blurb:

A report of a rare gun - a type favoured by assassins - being smuggled into the country sparks Detective Harry Hole's interest. Then a former WW2 Nazi sympathizer is found with his throat cut. Next, Harry's former partner is murdered. Why had she been trying to reach Harry on the night she was killed?

As Harry's investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the killer is hell-bent on serving his own justice. And while the link between the cases remains a mystery, one thing is certain: he must be stopped.

"Norway's finest crime writer... Nesbo clearly demonstrates his skill at executing expertly-crafted, well-paced thrillers that he sustains to the very end in a compelling fashion. As first novels go, The Redbreast and The Devil's Star are as accomplished as any reader is likely to experience" (Daily Express)

"A page-turner you won't want to put down" (Time Out)

"A complex, utterly captivating story" (Evening Standard)

P.S. - this is a long one - don't start it at the last minute!!

As for the book - Yup, I'd say I liked in - not loved - but liked. Crime novels are not my genre of choice - but occasionally I'll be in the mood, and I'd happily pick a Jo Nesbø

Just finished this yesterday. Thank goodness the writing style wasn't a challenge - because the names and the plot twists were enough to concentrate on! Enjoyable. Enough to make me want to read it again to make sure I picked up all the clues - but I haven't the time......

Hi everyone, really enjoying the book and looking forward to the meet up. I have a meeting at work but wanted to come along first to say hello, so it will be a flying visit I'm afraid! But refused to miss it!

I'm enjoying it too. A friend has emailed me more of his books. The only problem is that I have a terrible memory for names.

I'm not really getting into this book. Somebody tell me it gets better !

Actually, I'm quite enjoying it and found it easy to get into! Haven't read anything in this genre for longer than I can remember - though I suppose I do enjoy this sort of thing in film form. I know it's not super-literary but I'm finding it's written well enough, I want to know what happens next, the characters are interesting, Norway is far more interesting than I thought it would be, though that's probably just my ignorance.....

Hi everyone, I just had a look at the World Cup fixtures and there's no danger of an England match being played on 30th - so we should be ok in The George :)
