Ali And Nino – by Kurban Said

Ali Khan and Nino Kipiani live in the cosmopolitan capital of Azerbaijan which, at the beginning of the twentieth century, is a melting-pot of different cultures. Ali is a Muslim, with his ancestors' passion for the desert, and Nino is a Christian Georgian girl with sophisticated European ways. The two have loved each other since childhood and Ali is determined that he will marry Nino as soon as she leaves school. But there is not only the obstacle of their different religions and parental consent to overcome. The First World War breaks out. As the Russians withdraw, the Turks advance, and Ali and Nino find themselves swept up in Azerbaijan's fight for independence.

"Poignant and beautiful...alive with a vividly unique vision of colliding cultures and enduring love" (The Times)

"One feels as if one had dug up buried treasure...an epic cultural change that seems more immediate than this morning's headlines... An extraordinary novel" (New York Times)

Unfortunately I was booked into some work related training and can't be there tomorrow. Will only be back in London by 7 pm, too late for the book club!

Hi sorry I won't be able to attend as I have to go to Swindon that day for a work meeting. Will be back in London Paddington about 6.30, it will be too late to get to Wanstead at a reasonable time plus I will have to leave v early that day so will be too tired. Hope you all have a good eve. X

Brilliant - I will probably get there about 7:15 as I am at work helping with a training session until 7 - but I'm only on Cambridge Park so shouldn't be too much later :)

Well lots of people preferring Monday 10th, a fair few who didn't mind either and no-one preferring Tue 4th - so, Monday Nov 10th it is!

As a first timer don't feel I have a say but the 10th would give me a chance to properly finish the book. Looking forward to meeting you all

Hi All of You Signed Up to Come on Monday!

Hi everyone, it is great to see 17 of you signed up to come on Monday 3rd November. Only problem is I can't meet on Monday. We are having a financial crisis at work and an emergency meeting has been called for Monday evening and I have no option - I have to attend.

So I have to postpone the meeting. I would like to ask you all to vote on 2 options - I can postpone the meeting

    - delay by 1 day - to Tuesday 4th November

    - delay by 1 week - to Monday 10th November

Please state your preference, by Monday 10 am. Write your choice as a comment on the meetup page! Say you want Tue 4th November or Mon 10th November or both are OK. Sorry about this late change. Please don't vote if you weren't going to come anyway.

    BW, Sheila
