Jack Schaefer's classic novel illuminates the spirit of the West through the eyes of a young boy and a hero who changes the lives of everyone around him. Shane is made mythical by the perspective of a young boy who tells the story of his hero.

It is an an American classic that is more than a western. It's also a story about one of the myths of the United States - Shane is the embodiment of the Lone Hero on the Frontier. He rides out of the wilderness to aid the band of pioneers and take on the land-grabbing cattle baron. In 2014 this may seem a cliche, but Shane is actually the original archetype that gave birth to the genre of Westerns, both novels and film. It is distinguished from its imitators by the depth of its characters and quality of the writing.

The novel was translated into over 30 languages. Apparently, even those who do not like, westerns like Shane.

Please bring your book nominations along to the book meetup - preferably in the form of the book itself, otherwise bring the description or review.

THE GEORGE IS THE PUB OPPOSITE WANSTEAD TUBE STATION. We are trying it out because the Slug and Lettuce has become rather noisy - it's a struggle to be heard from one end of the table to the other. The George should be quieter as there is no music.
