New Meetup: September's Post-Apocalyptic Book Club Discussion: David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas

Announcing a new Meetup for The Freebird Brooklyn Post-Apocalyptic Book Club Meetup!

What: September's Post-Apocalyptic Book Club Discussion: David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas

When: Thursday, September 30,[masked]:30 PM

Where: Freebird Books
123 Columbia St
Brooklyn, NY 11231

David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas is not technically a full fledged post-apocalyptic novel since only one sixth of the book contains a narrative set in the distant future. But it's a virtuosic set piece that calls to mind the challenging dialect of Russell Hoban's Riddley Walker.

Like nesting dolls, each story in Mitchell's novel rests inside each other. Ranging from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, dystopian future, each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or watched) by the main character in the next. Mitchell has said of the book: "All of the [leading] characters except one are reincarnations of the same soul ... identified by a birthmark. ... The "cloud" refers to the ever-changing manifestations of the "atlas", which is the fixed human nature. ... The book's theme is predacity ... individuals prey on individuals, groups on groups, nations on nations."
