Thursday evening ten members had a great time celebrating the Club's 10th anniversary! Go to the Photos section of our website to see the "book cake," featuring one book from each year of the Club's existence. You'll also find a brief history of The Indianapolis Book Club.
Now it's time to embark on our next decade of fun, quality reading! The November selection is The Thing Around Your Neck, a short story collection published in 2009 by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The San Francisco Chronicle says "Masterful...These stories once again prove that Adichie is one of those rare writers any country or continent would feel proud to claim as its own." And The Washington Post: "Tragic, defiant, revelatory...Adichie deploys her calm, deceptive prose to portray women in Nigeria and America who are forced to match their wits against threats ranging from marauding guerrillas to microwave ovens."
Our book last month was New York Times Bestseller The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot. By happy coincidence Ms. Skloot will be in Indianapolis on October 24 to discuss her book. She will be joined by members of the Lacks family, with book sales and signings to follow. This free event will be held at the Northview Middle School (8401 Westfield Blvd.) from 6:00-8:00 PM, and doors open at 5:00. With a movie starring Oprah Winfrey having been released just last year, I'd suggest arriving early to be assured of a seat. See you November 8!
