The Forgotten Garden - Lynn's choice

On the eve of the first world war, a little girl
is found abandoned on a ship to Australia.
A mysterious woman called the Authoress
had promised to look after her -
but the Authoress has disappeared without
a trace.

I'm reading "Speaking from Among the Bones",a creative and amusing "crime-mystery" written by Alan Bradley. Flavia, the protagonist is precocious, cheeky and a chemist. Flavia is a pre-teen. I adore this book.

It was a "dark and stormy night." Obviously I won't be the next hot author but it truly was dark, with no power, and stormy last night where I live. Reading by candlelight is a challenge...lol. As for The Forgotten Garden, it was an interesting and enjoyable read. Although it was difficult to follow at times, like being lost in the maze in the story, I enjoyed the richness of the characters and the weaving together of the lives of Nell, Eliza, and Cassandra. There were small clues dropped like bread crumbs throughout the book, including the fairy tales written by Eliza, that with some patience by the reader, made sense by the final chapters. It was nice to have a twist at the end that was not totally predictable. Thanks to Lynn for choosing a great book and thanks to Dennis for his leadership at the meeting.

It may be a challenge to get the book for August since there are only 3 copies available at the Hamilton library and they are all in use :(

I enjoyed the book from the moment I picked it up, loved the multi-generational mystery, true to life characters with enough human weakness to make them real. I think most of us wonder about our heritage...the skeletons in our closets...many that take us on a journey of our own.
