This is a special event, additional to our normal monthly meeting, for Bloomsday initiated by Maria.
As a way of introducing those bookgroup readers who have never read 'Ulysses' by James Joyce (and I count myself in this group), Maria has challenged us to read Chapter 13 entitled 'Nausicaa' for 16 June which is known as 'Bloomsday' as the action of 'Ulysses' happens on that date in 1904.
Not only are we invited round to Maria's to celebrate Bloomsday but she has also asked us to dress as characters from the book (plenty of book character synopses out there from what I've been able to find in a brief search). Although we are not in Dublin we will be getting right into the spirit of the book by eating food which is mentioned in Ulysses - there seems to be much talk of sausages, toast and beans - and so I hope that even the most culinary-challenged of us will be able to contribute and help celebrate this date.
I am looking forward to what promises to be an exciting and memorable event. I hope that you are also inspired to come along for Bloomsday.
More details to follow as 16 June approaches.
