For this meetup, we will be discussing two of our favourite graphic novel series from our childhood - Tintin and Asterix
For those of us blessed with not having experienced either of these series before,
The Adventures of Tintin is an adventure series set between the 1930s - 1960s in a fictitious western European location. The stories are centered around the titular character - Tintin the reporter and his trusty dog Snowy. In later books, other characters such as Thomson and Thompson, Captain Haddock, Professor Cuthbert Calculus make their appearance as well, with the colourful Captain Haddock becoming a series regular. The stories themselves span various genres such as adventure, spy, mystery, science fiction - all with a healthy dose of humour sprinkled in.
The Adventures of Asterix book series on the other hand follows the hilarious and goofy adventures of Asterix the Gaul. Set in the year 50 B.C., the series follows the adventures of Asterix and his friend Obelix who live in the only Gaulish village which holds out against the Romans. The humour encountered in the Asterix comics often centers around puns, caricatures, and tongue-in-cheek stereotypes of contemporary European nations and French regions. The stories contain enough amusement and humour for the child and the adult alike. The books were originally written in French. If you do read the English version, be sure to pick up the British English translation.
And if you have read these stories before, please join in the discussion and tell us about your favourite stories.
