This 9-11 month contract position would require fluidity in both English and Japanese, knowledge of Japanese popular culture, as well as knowledge or educational experience in phonology and/or the International Phonetic Alphabet.

This position does not require a programming background. However, the hiring managers are stressing the necessity for experience (any amount, educational or professional) in phonetics, as the role will involve phonetic transcription.

This is a contract position that requires a commitment of a minimum of 20 hours per week, and a maximum of 40 hours a week. The duration of the contract is 9-11 months, with the possibility of turning the position into a permanent one.   Expectation is for work to be done in the office. Hours are flexible with possibility of performing the work partially from home therefore fast and stable internet connection is required.

Phonetic Transcriber, Japanese
Amazon is developing speech and language technology that powers devices like Amazon FireTV. We are seeking an experienced Japanese Data Specialist to build the lexicon and create phonetic transcription guidelines for Japanese. The candidate must be capable of producing high quality deliverables under aggressive time constraints.

Specifically, the Transcriber will:
• Build and maintain the phonetic lexicon for Japanese.
• Work with tooling team to identify and enhance features required specifically for
Japanese.
• Work with management on adapting transcription and annotation guidelines.
• Provide hands-on transcription and annotation services.
• Translate established guidelines into daily work practices.
• Train a small team to carry the lexicon effort forward, and work with management on workload scheduling and deliverables.

• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to quickly analyze data to draw and present

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a field related to languages or linguistics.
• Excellent Japanese language skills. All candidates must be native Japanese speakers or speak Japanese at a native level.
• Excellent English language skills. Candidates must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English with non-Japanese speaking team members.
• Up-to-date knowledge or awareness of popular culture in Japan.
• Computer literacy.
• Comprehension of a variety of Japanese accents.
• Communication skills and experience working with technical teams.
• Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, dynamic work environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Knowledge of applied linguistics, in particular phonology/phonetics.
• Previous transcription or annotation experience.
