Boston Star Trek Convention June 2013

Creation Entertainment is bringing their Star Trek cavalcade to Boston June 8th and 9th, 2013. Currently slated to appear are William Shatner, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols (YES!), Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, and more.

There are several different ticket packages available. If you avail yourself of the top of the line Gold Weekend Package, you will get a reserved seat in the main hall, an autograph from William Shatner, George Takei, and Nichelle Nichols, and first shot at getting autographs from the others. Try to select a seat around or near F50 and F51. That's where Caitlin and I will be.

As the date draws near, we can plan for more fun and hanging out. Maybe an after-party?

Anyone from this group going out to Vegas for this convention? They've got over 92 celebs going so far so it should be sweet.

  • Alissa

I had a great time at the con! First time at a Trek con like this. None of my pictures came out too well, but I suspect that is because I was distracted by all the cool things happening. Next time I will bring my better camera!

    June 13, 2013

    • Jerry

Bummer about the camera, but awesome that you had a good time. I was really cool to hang with you.

      June 13, 2013

    • Alissa

It was great hanging out with you too! If I end up going next year I will definitely take better pictures. This being my first time seeing everyone onstage I was totally absorbed with listening, but next time I can pay more attention to getting a few good photos. Thank you for being so helpful on the ins/outs for a newbie :)

Please state the nature of the medical emergency?

    (Sorry, couldn't help myself)

Hey, did anyone get a picture of Zefram Cochrane? I looked for him after the Costume Contest Saturday, but I couldn't find him.

    June 12, 2013

  • Jerry

Any more pictures? If you have any, please share them with the group by uploading them to the photo album (link below). And thanks to everyone for a great weekend! http://www.meetup.com/boston-scifi/photos/15367502/

Wish I could have made it but I'm planning on going to the Vegas con in August so probably no big loss. :-)

Startrek.com posted a recap of the con. It's a bit overly positive, and doesn't touch on some of the more eyebrow raising parts of the con, like the Shatner and Crosby exchange during the reunion about her being a sexpot. Plus their assessment of the dealers room was WAY off. It was small and not very interesting.

    Day one:

    Reunion and day two:

It started from a question geared for the women about how feminism has interacted w/ Scifi and if they would have done anything different for their characters if TNG were produced now vs 25 years ago. Shatner opened it up to the men as well before letting Denise/Gates/Marina answer. Shatner said Yar was the sex symbol for TNG after Denise mentioned producers wanting her to stick her tits out. Kind of went down hill from there.

      Wow. Thanks for explaining it.

Didn't really meet anyone from this group, but I was so busy trying to attend the panels/Q&A. Thanks Jerry for all the information - it was really helpful. There were hardly any vendors, but that was good for my wallet. But I did buy a reunion ticket. I really like Denise Crosby as a person. She opened her session on Sunday with something on the lines of, "Wasn't it fun teasing William Shatner last night?" And he was sitting nearby doing autographs!

OMG I've heard Bill Shatner is an assh*le, but is he ever -- he ruined the reunion. Dismissive, interrupting, changing people's questions. Asking the male cast members the questions a girl had posed to the women.... He kept the conversation to the basest, lowest common denominator and was actually pissing people off. He sucks!!

    June 8, 2013

    • Steve

      Wow. What started all that?

      June 9, 2013

    • Kevin

The best part of that was when Marina got up and smacked him in the head.

My take on the convention: I liked the convention. Next time, I wouldn't go for the preferred single day ticket since you don't get an autograph and there are non-preferred seats which are better. I was surprised they didn't use the big overhead screen(The side screens were kind of blurry). I loved the fact that you could see the actors signing autographs. I have to admit, Gates McFadden looked really good. They did not honor my coupon at the garage. I'm going to have to go back and argue with customer service about it. My Take on the meetup: I think this is a hard meetup event to plan because there is no real down time. Once the stage events start(and during registration), different people want to see different things at different times. So, lack of meetups is understandable. Still, good to have this option to just be able to text people and get help if needed.

    June 8, 2013

    • Jerry

Thanks for the feedback, Steve. You're spot on in your assessment of the meetup part. I had a hard time standing still long enough to hold a sign before running off for photo ops and autograph sessions. I've already purchased for next year, and plan to learn from this event if I host the next one.

Such an awesome weekend. I really can't wait for next year's. I'm pretty sure my credit card had the most fun.

    June 10, 2013

  • Stacy

This was a fantastic experience for my family and I! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I didn't get to connect with any members of the Boston Scifi Group, but there was lots to see and do. I was disappointed by the small vendors section, but the thrill of being there more than made up for it. I hope to go again next year!

    June 10, 2013

  • Jerry

Well it certainly is hard to coordinate a meetup in a bustling convention environment, especially when they published the schedule so late. But when we managed to get together it was great and really made the weekend a lot of fun for me. I really enjoyed myself all weekend.

I thought the Next Generation Reunion Program was fabulous! William Shatner did a great job and the whole cast was wonderful.

Just a reminder, for those coming on Sunday, we are still getting together. Look for me near room 209. I'm easy to spot.

Wish I hadn't had to run home right after the Reunion...Looking forward to more fun tomorrow!

One more thing: If anyone knows what Suzie Plakson was referring to when she said, "Oh my God. Oh my God" let me know. I couldn't hear the question or the answer, sadly.

My take on food: I ate at Atlantic fish across the street from the Pru. It's a little upscale, but they give decent food. I got the steamed muscles(in white wine), Salmon with spinach, potato and glass of white wine. Outdoor seating gives a good view of the street for people watching.

    June 8, 2013

Went to Starbucks, but couldn't place anyone. Headed back to center. Those poor actors, big crowd at autographs this morning.

We need a more detailed meet plan. For the 615, let's pick a super-specific spot, like "directly in front of the salad place in the mall just outside the Hynes", or something similar. Also, maybe what some flagship group members are wearing.

      June 8, 2013

    • Steve

Sorry I missed you. Since this is my first event and meet up I don't know all the members.

Since we don't have a thing for after TNG yet: meet to the right of the theater exit, near the tiny cafe thing? Choo choo beer train!

Taking the T for the con. Tonight there are Sox and Bruins games. If anyone else is taking the T, I'd recommend the Orange line to Back Bay. Then you can walk through the malls/pedestrian walkways to the Pru,the Hynes and the Sheraton.

    June 7, 2013

Sox game got rained out. The Green line will be a lot less crowded.

Hi! My family and I are going! We are so excited! We purchased Saturday-only tickets and the schedule says we can't register until 10:45am? But the vendors room and theater will be open at 9:30am? How does that work? We want to give ourselves plenty of time to get there and get in. Especially is the Boston scifi group is meeting at 9:15am. Can we come early and still get in? Also, are there restaurants and places to buy food in there? Please let me know!

    Schedule is up!
    http://www.creationent.com/cal/stma.htm#sch

For our Meetup, here is what I've put together. I know some of the times don't work, especially if you are doing photo ops then. Arranging meetups at Cons is a lot like herding cats, so don't worry about it. Tweet using #bsffmu I'll check that through the day, or post to discussion page.

    Schedule (Sat.):
    * 9:15: Meet and Greet outside room #209, pre-function hall C. (Informal voting for favorite series.) See map: http://files.meetup.com/1434288/ST-BOS13-MAP.pdf
    * 12:30: Meet at Sheraton Starbucks (touch base, group photos)
    * 6:15: Meet outside main auditorium. (Show off your swag, any parties?)

    Schedule (Sun.):
    * 9:15: Meet and Greet outside room #209, pre-function hall C.
    * 12:30: Meet at Sheraton Starbucks (touch base, group photos,)
    * Ping us if are still around at Con’s End if you want to meet again to show off your swag, after con drinks, etc.

No matter what, please take lots of pics and post them to the meetup page!

I'll be there - as a volunteer, for most of the week-end. But, I can't assume that I'll be able to join with the Meet-Up there. For that reason, I've changed my RSVP to "No". I'll try to watch for you on Sunday.

    June 5, 2013

  • Lisa

    Can't wait.

    June 5, 2013

  • Jerry

Just a reminder that if you purchased a weekend pass, you can pre-register Friday night. The dealer's room will also be open Friday night if you want to score any goodies before the crowds arrive. http://www.creationent.com/ads/stma10.htm

An event schedule should be posted tomorrow. I will also then post my ideas for getting together.

    June 4, 2013

  • Steve

This will be my first con on Saturday. I'm looking forward to it.

    June 4, 2013

  • Jerry

    Two pieces of news:
Jonathan Frakes will not be able to attend the convention. Those who purchased photo ops with him will be issued a voucher if you present the PDF printed out tickets when you purchased the op. You then mail in the voucher for a refund. See site for details.

Next: ANNOUNCING FRIDAY NIGHT PRE-REGISTRATION: For patrons coming for the full two days (you do not need to be also coming to the Saturday evening show) and have either GOLD WEEKEND PACKAGES, PREFERRED WEEKEND PACKAGES, or GENERAL ADMISSION WEEKEND PACKAGES we will have pre-registration on Friday Evening, June 7, from 6 pm to 9:30 pm at The Hynes Center, Veterans Auditorium Foyer. Pre-Registration is not a necessity. See site for more details.

Even if you are not coming for the two days, I hope you can join us for the Fan Rendezvous at the Sheraton Friday night at 7. Sounds fancy but it's really just a bunch of us getting together to meet each other and have a drink. It's not part of the con at all.

    May 30, 2013

  • Jerry

Hey all, I wanted to let you know that I am working on a schedule of "low impact" activities for us to get to know each other. Basically a meet and greet at the start of each day. The only thing holding this up is that they have not posted a schedule yet. Also, instead of lunch perhaps meeting outside the Sheraton Starbucks might be better. I'll post it soon. In the meantime a map showed up in the Bloodhound app for the venue. It's pretty generic, but apparently room #209 is important.
