February Book Club

Good News Everyone!

The poll this month was a clear winner for once! With 8 votes, The Shadow Speaker by Nnedi Okorafor was your pick for the book club!

From Amazon:

Driven by vengeance. Destined for peace.
Niger, West Africa, 2070:
After fifteen-year old Ejii witnesses her father's beheading, her world shatters. In an era of mind-blowing technology and seductive magic, Ejii embarks on a mystical journey to track down her father's killer. With a newfound friend by her side, Ejii comes face to face with an earth turned inside out—and with her own magical powers.
But Ejii soon discovers that her travels across the sands of the Sahara have a greater purpose. Her people need to be protected from a force seeking to annihilate them. And Ejii may be just the hero to do it.
This futuristic, fantastical adventure heralds a bright new talent on the YA fantasy scene.

We will be meeting at Comicazi on Highland Ave in Davis Square. There is metered parking all along Highland as well as a public lot on Day Street near Redbones and across the street from Orleans restaurant. There is also T access and bus connections.

See you there!

I'm still waiting on my library copy. It looks like Who Fears Death, a newer publication by Okorafor, is still in print and more readily available. Probably too late to change over, though...

      No worries. I was e-mailed and told that they were able to find a decent copy used for about six or seven dollars. But it takes a bit of time for an order to go through so you might want to check how available it is sooner rather than later if you do end up using them -_-;;;

Woot! I love my Local Bookstore! Just got contacted that they were able to find a library quality copy for less than ten dollars. Win!

Ok, so it ended up being a little more than expected, but still less than 20. I can live with that

Authors of color to read outside of Black History month! Though I'm not entirely sure we're reading Nnedi Okorafor because the book club will be meeting in February... Anyway, here's some good recommendations year round!

Here's a podcast interview that begins with with Nnedi Okorafor and her cute daughter, Anyaugo Okorafor! In case you were interested in learning more about her. :) http://outeralliance.podbean.com/2012/09/18/outer-alliance-podcast-24/

It also touches on the H.P. Lovecraft controversy that Nnedi was involved in. Very interesting.

Sorry this book is so hard to find. I thought it would be difficult but not this difficult. If someone would like the borrow the version I have then reply to this.

I'm in Porter square twice a day and could also easily make a stop by Davis to drop it off.

The March book club poll is out! Go vote for your preference in this throw down of sci-fi greats! On Basilisk Station (OBS) if the first book of the Honor Harrington series and is one of the too-few sci-fi books I've come across with a strong female lead! Even if it doesn't get picked, I would suggest you add it to your TBR (to-be-read) lists. Also, OBS is available free from the publisher in e-book form, here: http://tinyurl.com/a43zksx

Ender's Game is the other contender, I think little has to be said in its favor. It is a sci-fi classic for a reason.
