Re: [bostonatheists] Media depiction of atheiss

Honestly, I don't need to see big statements about atheism/atheists in the media.  I think more subtle storylines pack a bigger punch.  For example, how a woman handles being asked to be godmother to a close relative's child when she doesn't believe in or support the baptism ritual (which recently happened to me).  Or how a man handles it when, faced with a failing marriage, his family urges him to go to church to seek counsel.  Just once I'd like to hear a character use the word "atheist" instead of something more benign like, "I don't believe in any of that."  Not to take this off-topic, but what I find much more concerning and dangerous is the prevalence of false rape accusations as part of the story line in crime dramas, and the complete lack of discussion in entertainment media of abortion as a positive choice.  Also, I think the portrayal of clergy falls too far on the extremes.  They're either all child molesters or simple, open, avuncular, folksy people.  There's a lot more nuance and disagreement between clergy and the laity that could be portrayed in TV/film ("The Tudors" notwithstanding).

Oh good, I'm glad we got to sneak a female character in there in the most passive role possible.

Sounds like Humanism!

My idea for an atheist screenplay would be that a reporter, priest, minister and a few others, on their way to an interfaith meeting crash in the ocean and encounter a utopian society where religion, supernatural, god etc are unknown by all but a few. The island has been undiscovered because the inhabitants have an advanced stealth technology. They are generally advanced technologically because they full embrace knowledge and reject superstition. The reporter is a vehicle for asking questions such as "without the morality of religion, how are you not at each other throats?" The minister, after seeing this utopian society, has a crisis of faith and becomes an atheist. The priest tries to infect society with supernatural beliefs (especially the children) with disastrous results and ultimately has to be kicked off the island. There could also be a woman with a terminal disease to show how the culture deals with mortality.

Great topic, Zach, and thanks Will for adding in those two movies.

Anyone also want to list movies/TV where atheists are not villains or deluded folks who get their faith back?  For example, Dr. House (of 'House'). He's not a nice guy, but isn't really a straw atheist (or is he?)
