With the 2nd tutuorial, I found a bug in the jquery.color.js scripts. The javascript console showed an error on line 160. I searched and found the jquery.color.js file on Github and it had been updated.
The line has: if ( jQuery.isNaN( value ) ) {
and it should be: if ( isNaN( value ) ) {
I corrected and saved my local jquery.color.js file and it worked fine after that.

Funny, I removed the jQuery. and it made no difference my sidebar is still not turning white
