Getting Smoke in your Rust and not in your Pi - Alan Robertson
"I'm a long time Geek, software developer, and creator of some useful and popular open source software - initiated right at the Boulder Linux User's group. I'm also an avid meat smoker - smoking around 1000 lbs (450 kg) of meat each year.
I've been on an adventure to make a better pellet smoker controller - for fun and to solve some problems.
In the process I've been learning Rust, renewing my soldering skills, and building a little hardware and software for the Raspberry Pi capable of controlling a pellet grill.
So it's got a live demo, Rust, Grok, Raspberry Pi, smoked meat, broken Raspberry Pi drivers, lying hardware vendors, and enough soldering to annoy my air filters.
This is the story of how I got from an idea, to a fun hardware and software project, including my first use of AI in a software project, and where I'd like it to go in the future.
