Dearest Boffins of Distinction.
First of all, let me start by wishing us all a Happy AI Birthday! BrumAI has officially been running for a year now and what a year it's been - we've grown from a small group of 12 attendees, to a humungous parliament of almost 450 wise owls!
Thanks to everyone who's been involved - from helping to organise, to speaking, to just coming along and helping drive the discussions, we couldn't've done it without you all!
This month, we're happy to report that we now have 3 very exciting talks confirmed on a wide range of topics:
Talk 1: Testing Non-Deterministic Systems - Talk, Interview & Discussion (35 mins)
Siddhartha and Ioana both work with very different systems, both where safety is paramount. How do we ensure safety in AI systems, when these systems are no longer deterministic?
In this talk, interview and audience discussion, we'll explore examples from the Financial Services and Self-Driving Car sectors.
Siddartha Khastgir is Principal Engineer & the Research Lead for Verification & Validation of CAVs at Warwick Manufacturing Group, University of Warwick. He represents the UK on the ISO Technical Committee & is the lead author of a new international standard for Low-Speed Automated Driving (LSAD) systems. He has received numerous awards for his research, made the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2018 list & won TechWorks Young Engineer of the Year 2017.
Ioana Porcarasu is Lead QA Engineer at Wealth Wizards, focusing on product quality whilst being an evangelist of continuous delivery & automation. Co-founder of the recently started MeetUp "Women in Tech, Warwickshire", hoping to empower more women to start a career in Tech.
Talk 2: Urdu Text Recognition using Computer Generated Dataset - Talk (20 mins)
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems for Latin-based languages have been around for many decades. However, with recent advances in deep learning and computational power, the technology is now powerful enough to even recognise words written in languages which employ the Arabic script such as Urdu. The biggest bottleneck for using this technology is the need for huge labelled datasets.
Zain-ull-Abiddin Daniyal is a Data Scientist and Full Stack Developer at Carnell. He loves working on unique projects.
Talk 3: Research Institute of Information and Language Processing (RIILP) proposes CURA - Talk (15 mins)
This talk presents a project proposal to create the Centre for UK
Research Assessment (CURA). CURA will bring together researchers
working in artificial intelligence and computational linguistics with
experts in scientometrics, webometrics and altmetrics to develop and
apply intelligent methods for assessing the societal and fine-grained
scholarly impacts of research. CURA leverages new deep
learning techniques to do this more precisely than previously possible.
Dr Constantin Orasan is a Reader in Computational Linguistics at the
University of Wolverhampton, & Deputy Head of the Research Group in Computational Linguistics (RGCL). With over 20 years of experience, he is an expert in the fields of NLP, AI and ML for language processing. More about him at http://www.wlv.ac.uk/~in6093/
December’s edition of BrumAI is hosted by Alpha Works, a contemporary styled collaborative office space, providing hot desking, co-working, and private office/studio services in the heart of Birmingham.
More information can be found at https://www.alphaworksb1.co.uk/
Alpha Tower, Suffolk Street Queensway, Birmingham B1 1TT, UK
As usual, there'll be free pizza & drinks, and some of the most interesting people in the Midlands! See you there!
