RubyGem speedup question

From: Viktor V.

I am willing to harness the power of knowing You guys, again :)

So I wish not to "attack" with my gem install requests so often. Now I am playing with Vagrant and want to learn Chef-solo, these require many machine create-install-destroy processes and Rubygems - is slow in general - is major pain in the  #$@&%*! during my learning.
Do you have a good recipe for using a different source for gems then Should I set up a mirror on a private cloud vm? Are there any official mirrors to add to my gem source list?

Thank you for your kind help in advance and is wish the Happiest New Year ever to All of You out there!
