Budapest Silent Book Club – Monthly Book Club: Satantango

Welcome to the Monthly Book Club — the discussion edition of the Budapest Silent Book Club for those who enjoy reading the same book and sharing thoughts together.

Each month, we pick a book that’s powerful to talk about — something that lingers, provokes, and stays with you long after you finish. The focus is on meaningful reads and relaxed, thoughtful conversations.

This time, we’ll be diving into one of the most haunting modern Hungarian classics: Sátántangó by László Krasznahorkai. Set in a decaying village cut off from the world, the novel follows a small group of desperate residents whose fragile hopes are reignited by the rumored return of a mysterious figure. Told in long, hypnotic sentences and a looping, tango-like structure, Sátántangó explores stagnation, manipulation, faith, and despair with dark humour and unsettling intensity. It’s a demanding but deeply rewarding read — and especially exciting to revisit now, with renewed international attention on Krasznahorkai’s work in light of his recent Nobel Prize in Literature.
