November 17 Meeting this Saturday

From: Tom L.
Sent on: Thursday, November 15, 2007 5:32 PM
Please join us on November 17 for meditation and a meeting to plan the details of our organization and what we would like to do as a group. The meditation starts at 9:30am, with meeting at 10am. We will have a potluck lunch at noon. Last time everyone had a lot of energy and fun. We sit around on the carpet in a circle to discuss things.

Location: Chinese Community Church,[masked] Ave., N., Pinellas Park, FL 33781. Contact Tom (727) 455-1056. RSVP: The Buddhist Peace Fellowship - Tampa Bay

Here are some examples of things we can organize:

(1) Visit other Buddhist groups to share information about peace and other issues of socially engaged Buddhism, to coordinate specific ways that people can get involved and to support each other.

(2) Work with other local groups on specific issues. For example, I met with Rev. Bruce Wright of Refuge Ministries in St. Pete. He has been very active in working with the homeless and getting support for city and private initiatives, such as providing housing downtown for the homeless.

(3) Work on specific areas such as Burma, to prepare up-to-date information for distribution both online and as hand outs about current events and how we can best help the monks and people of Burma in their long struggle against brutal oppression.

(4) Public meditation gatherings for outreach to the public as well as to call for peace. We had a very good gathering in support of Burma downtown last time.

(5) Do a survey of members and other Buddhists to see what they are doing and what they might like to do.

(6) Ask others to join us and volunteer for various specific projects or let them know of existing projects that might suite their interest.

(7) Build a new interactive website that people can use as a base for organizing, finding out what is going on and provide feedback, post blogs and pictures of various local events and issues as well as to raise money online.

So we need to brainstorm a little to organize ourselves the best way, what kinds of committees we will have and who will volunteer for what functions.

Also, we have made a new Google Group already focused on the discussion of such issues. We encourage everyone to join this Google group and to participate.

We will try to have a very organized and productive meeting so that we can move forward.

Thank you so very much and Peace!
