ANF-PCT SERIES

The Pacific Crest Trail spans 2,650 miles (4,265 kilometers) from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington. It reveals the beauty of the desert, unfolds the glaciated expanses of the Sierra Nevada, travels deep forests, and provides commanding vistas of volcanic peaks in the Cascade Range. The trail symbolizes everything there is to love—and protect—in the Western United States.
Untold thousands of hikers and equestrians enjoy this international treasure each year. Some only travel a few miles, while others complete every mile in a single season.

We’ve talked about doing a series of PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) hikes in the ANF (Angeles National Forest) very much like the BBT series we’ve done. Now it’s time to act on it and sign up. Like the BBT series, these will involve car shuttles so that we can cover 10 to 15 miles of PCT each event. Unlike the BBT series, these will require much further driving distances for most of us. Some of the shuttles require traveling on dirt forest service roads which most cars are capable of handling. Where the BBT consisted of 5 hikes over 66 miles, the ANF-PCT will involve 11 hikes covering 138 miles. As we did with the BBT series, we will take each PCT section the easiest way (that way with the least elevation gain). Since there is a 12 mile closure of the PCT around the Lake Hughes area due to the Powerhoue Fire, we’ll also include a 13 mile section through Vasquez Rocks that links the two ANF sections giving a total distance of 139 miles of PCT out of its 2650 mile total. In the future we could go beyond that 151 mile ANF section to include the San Bernardino National Forest. Some of the trailheads will be accessed by dirt forest service roads. Some trailheads will be hard to find, so we’ll meet at earlier locations and caravan from there. Weather or road closures could possibly come up that would force us to reschedule that particular event as soon as possible. If planning on taking several of the 13 PCT hikes, you should purchase an annual ADVENTURE PASS. Upon completion of the entire 11 PCT-ANF hikes with CDH, you’ll be presented a certificate very much like the one we gave out for the BBT series. Also, placed after your name, you’ll have ANF-PCT.

RE DO ANF-PCT-11

This eleventh event will be from Windy Gap to Vincent Gap (west to east) and will be the highest elevation during this series and it will conclude the ANF-PCT hike series. Along the ridge we'll have the option to take on 4 peaks (Mount Hawkins, Throop Peak, Mount Burnham and Mt. Baden Powell). Plan on joining Jolene and me after the hike at Los Gringos Locos (631 Foothill Blvd. in La Canada). For those having completed all 11 ANF-PCT hikes (1-4 and 6-12), CDH will present the certificates there. So plan on an extra long day for this event. As it stands now, Brad, Monica, Jolene, Arlette, Mayra, Debra, George, Sara, Claudine, Dave, Lynne and I will have completed all 11 ANF PCT hikes with CDH on the completion of this 11th PCT hike.

MEETUP TIME, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: Take the 210 Fwy. and exit Angeles Crest Hwy 2. Continue on the Angeles Crest Hwy. until you reach the Vincent Gap at mile marker 74.80. We'll all meet here at 7:30 a.m. before we take as few cars as possible to Windy Gap. ELEVATION LOSS/GAIN: 3100’/2500’

ALTERNATE MEETUP TIME, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: From the 210 Fwy, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy and drive north about a quarter mile to just past Milmada Dr. in LA CANADA, then park alongside the road. We'll all meet there no later than 6:00 a.m. ready to fill the cars half full and drive to Vincent Gap.

EARLIER MEETUP TIME, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way, we can meet at the Agoura Hills Park and Ride no later than 5:15 a.m. located on Roadside Dr. across from Burger King. Exit 101 Fwy. at Kanan Rd. We can only fill the cars half full at this point. Have a full tank and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don't drive can help pay for gas.

DISTANCE: 10 miles

TERRAIN: Trail with gradual climbs and descents at 6500’ to 9000’ elevation range.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Strong intermediate hiker capable of hiking 10 challenging miles.

ADVENTURE PASS: Will be required at Vincent Gap.

The Fine Print/Please Read!

Wear lug soled shoes, long sleeve shirt and long pants for brush and tick protection, and dress in layers for comfort.

Bring at least 1 liter of water per 3 miles, snacks, lunch (if posted), hiking poles (if you use them), camera and the "Ten Essentials".

Carry rain gear if the rain forecast is 20 percent chance or better.

Know your own capabilities and plan accordingly.

No guests or "plus ones" please. For liability reasons we must have everyone join the group, and agree to the standard Meetup "Terms of Service", especially section 6.2, here.
Be on time -- It is extremely rude to be late and expect 20 people to wait for you. Even if you call, it is still inappropriate to think that they should wait for you.

Don't be a no show -- How hard is it to remove your name? TAKE IT OFF IF YOU CANNOT MAKE IT! The earlier the better so someone else that wants to go, can.

Any outdoors activity can be challenging, fun, or a painful experience, (often depending who you are with), even deadly and more painful depending on you, your abilities, circumstances and sometimes just bad luck. Accidents happen. Please do not sign up if you are not comfortable with what you are doing, or if you think you don’t have the needed skills for the event. You will be agreeing to take responsibility for yourself, your actions and not to hold organizer/group leader, participants, or anyone liable but yourself by signing up for this event.
