Always worth sharing...

Living Beautifully Edition 8

Living Beautifully by is a regular newsletter to share and inspire a different way of looking at the world: we have all had enough of ugly. We celebrate people who explore beauty beyond the superficial and strive to deliver truth, meaning and authenticity through beautiful products, experiences and solutions that will nourish one’s soul… all, Living Beautifully.

01. Conversations about Beauty

Konrad Brits is the founder and CEO of Falcon Coffees who source green coffee from eighteen producing countries, and work with coffee roasting companies all over the world. Konrad talks about purpose before profit, which means creating a resilient supply chain benefiting the growers over the long term. In this interview Konrad touches upon the same theme as Dame Fiona Reynolds which is the shift in the values of young people who want to buy ethical goods with traceability, who want to work for companies that are a comet’s tail of purpose.

02. Beautifully Made

Unmade – is a fashion technology business, started in 2013 by Hal Watts, Kirsty Emery and Ben Alun-Jones. In 2014 they initially launched a prototype brand as Knyttan. Individual tailored apparel for you without the waste. This is mass-customisation that scales. December last year Unmade formed a long term partnership with premium cycling brand Rapha.

P98a  –  is a letterpress company, that makes extraordinarily beautiful books, posters and any artefact that is printed on paper, but done to the highest degrees of skill, and craftsmanship. I know that books are more than aesthetics because they carry ideas, like the King James Bible the first to be written and printed in the common English vernacular, they release ideas, knowledge, insight, philosophies into this world. And books still have a role to play. So if you are going to make something why not make it with love and craft it into a thing of beauty?

03. Beautifully Restorative

Afterglow — Vivienne Rickman-Poole swims in the deep waters in Snowdonia. This is Wales as in Tolkien country. Listen to her description of how the water feels through the months of the year as the body senses the changes. Time to think, clarity of thought, peace, depth, space. There is scientific evidence that cold water swimming provides immense benefits for those that suffer with depression.

I am interested in how we become restorative, not only spiritually, but also, by the concept of what I call THE TOTAL: What we take; What we make; What we waste. This is a story about how a small town, Wolfhagen, reclaimed its grid and sparked a community revolution. It’s where the Japanese and South Koreans fly in just to take lessons.

04. Beautiful Leadership

Two stories about leadership.

The first, about the best teacher in the world Andria Zafirakou. There is a prize, Andria won it. She says, “build trust with your kids – then everything else can happen. My calling in life is that every child reaches their full potential”. A leaders role?

Second, a podcast from Harvard Business ReviewThis is a story about Leadership which says, if leaders can put the needs of others in an organisation before their own, it enables everyone in the company to do their best work.

Common thread - leadership is about listening, it is one of the greatest gifts we can give each other. Listening with respect, acknowledging the dignity in each of us, creates powerful bonds of trust.

05. Beautiful Food

The restaurant critic Jay Rayner writes, "United Chip may be the bravest restaurant opening in years. Sure, you can open an izakaya or a ceviche place, something niche with a dreadful concept, and a few people will have an opinion on that. Some will consider themselves experts. But open a sustainable chippy? They use sustainable, line-caught fish. Every single piece of packaging is recyclable. Even their sunflower oil – cleaner tasting, vegetarian friendly, doesn’t make you smell of rendered cow – gets turned into bio-fuel when they’re done. Yes, the chef may be Sardinian, but be in no doubt: this is a British chippy."

United Chip, 5 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1M 5PE [masked]). Meal for two, excluding drinks: £25 (at most).

06. Beautiful Reads

How to Love — Thich Nhat Hanh

Such a tiny book. With so many big things to say. Love is everything, so easy to say, so hard to do. Thich Nhat Hanh founded Plum Village in France after being exiled from Vietnam. He has written many books. He too is one who leads with grace and great elegance.

07. Beautiful Insights

“We walked always in beauty, it seemed to me. We walked and looked about, or stood and looked. Sometimes, less often, we would sit down. We did not often speak. The place spoke for us and was a kind of speech. We spoke to each other in the things we saw” — Wendell Berry

Berry led with a vision and knowledge of what it is to be embedded in the landscape and to respect it, how it inspired.

The World Happiness Report is a landmark survey of the state of global happiness. The World Happiness Report 2018, ranks 156 countries by their happiness levels, and 117 countries by the happiness of their immigrants. Finland came in at No.1.

In 2016, based on a lifetime's practice, I published ‘Do Design. Why beauty is key to everything'. Since then, I’ve invited businesses from around the world to explore these intriguing questions — What would your business look like if it were more beautiful? What is a beautiful business, and, what does it mean in practice?

I sought out leaders and CEOs, craftsmen and makers, artists and writers who lead lives with greater purpose. I went in search of profitable businesses across the globe that are enduringly beautiful. From that inspiring journey came an extensive record of companies that show business can be worthwhile, meaningful and profitable.

This guide is based on that journey together with the knowledge I have gathered over my career as a maker, innovator, mentor and trainer. I hope you find it as insightful and optimistic as I do.

Beautiful Businesses are the future, find out why, through my books, workshops and talks.
