London Cantonese Language July Meetup

  • Jul 13, 2014 · 12:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Welcome to the London Cantonese Language (倫敦廣東話) meetup group.

We are an informal group consisting of a variety of people who can speak Cantonese as their first or second language. The group encourages every member to have a go at communicating in Cantonese although you are not obliged to do so, you may speak in English if you much prefer. However, we think this would be a good opportunity for you to practice your Cantonese with fellow members.

From members' requests, it has been decided that we will rotate days to meet throughout the year. On odd-numbered months, meetups will be on Sundays, while on even-numbered months, they'll be on Saturdays.

As a summary of the day's event:
1. 12-1pm: Meet at location stated for quick informal chat and drinks (no need to RSVP if only coming for this), we normally gather downstairs but if it is closed then we may be at the back of the cafe.
2. 1.30pm-3pm: Head to a pre-booked restaurant for some scrumptious, succulent dim sum (點心)
3. 3pm~: Optional Free-time - usually go for drinks afterwards for extended social chat in a local bar
Hope you can join us.

Please note, you are NOT required to RSVP if coming only for the coffee/free time session. Simply post a comment saying so or send us a message indicating this.

If you wish to come along for Dim Sum, please confirm by RSVP before the deadline date. We appreciate if members could update their RSVP if you decide later that you cannot come so the space can be reallocated to other members.

If you miss the deadline or there are no spaces left, you are more than welcome to join us for the coffee or later at the free time drinks, just send us a message for our contact details (you should also do this if you are likely to be late or held up on the day).

We look forward to seeing you there!

Any further queries, please feel free to send us a message.

The Meetup was great fun! Everyone so welcoming & friendly. Really pleased I went along. Feel like I have made some new friends. Plus Dan ordered such an obscene amount of food. Great choice of restaurant & dishes. Well done Dan!

Hi everybody. I'm stuck in traffic so will be late. We normally sit on the central bench in the bar

A note to ppl who have come before:

I would only be booking the restaurant for how many who has RSVPd by Saturday evening at 1800.

    A note to new members:

I am trialling a payment system for the forthcoming months to see if it works.
    The reasons are:
    - to cover an organiser fee that I have to pay each month,
    - to encourage people not to pull out last minute (which makes it difficult for the host for that day who has booked a restaurant for the numbers set a few days before), and
    - to encourage people to actually turn up (no change in RSVP)!
We've been having problems with the latter two situations of late and hopefully, this small fee (of 88p) will be a somewhat deterrent towards that.
If not, I will see what else could be done. I know sometimes that things come up last minute and then the member will lose 88p, but hey, it's 88p - a nice and lucky number in Chinese to use.
Any questions and concerns - feel free to contact me.
